I went to many games there in my youth. I saw Connie Mack managing the A's. Saw DiMaggio, Ted Wiliams, Aaron, Mays, Koufax, Robin Roberts, Ashburn, and many others play there.

i think this one is a reach. hayes was a solid right fielder. the position every player on the bench can play. he didnt embarrass himself with the bat but again he was billed as a future pillar of the team. the phillies traded franco, an actual future pillar for a guy who was at best a 5-6 hitter in the lineup and defensively played the easiest position on the field, save 1st base, which is the other long term home for this average fielder. hayes had a mystique with his movie star looks and his slow menacing warmup swing, but lets not fall in love with a very very replaceable guy who, if you put him on the wall, you have to make room for a whole bunch of other emotional favorites who's stats just dont warrent it.

people tend to un derestimate chase utly's worth to this team. they gave the best pitcher cole hamils the mvp but it was utley who hit a home run in the 1st inning of the first game of the world series. i think this was crucial for the teams confidence in the beginning of that series.

folks should also be aware of the fued between the phillies and bruce froeming, the umpire that called that right field trap a catch. in the past froeming had found several ways to deny the phillies in important games before. including 2 calls that ended their hopes of beating the dodgers in the NLCS back in the 70's. phillies announcers used to openly call him a fat drunkin pig. there was a real hatred there and it went both ways. froeming always seemed to be somewhere an important call had to be made and it never ever went in philly's favor.

im a life long phillies fan but im not sure they win that series if the astros hadnt lost j r richard for the season. richard was a legit number 1 starter at the time and with just carolton i dont see philly getting thru that series. thank god they won the world series cause that injury to richard would have been all the news if they hadnt.

September 83 has so many memories for me. First, I share a birthday with Joe Morgan, so I definitely remember that September 19th performance. I remember the Phillies were 1-11 versus the Dodgers that year, which made the NLCS that much more remarkable. And Len Matuszak probably had his best month as a Phillie.

With all due respect to the late great Gary Carter, i remember disliking his style and attitude. There's competitiveness like with Pete Rose and Bowa, both of whom i love, but Gary was different. There seemed to be some unhinged anger with him that contrasts well in comparison to Bob Boone and Milt May. That was my view as a kid back in the day, not now. But the notion still resonates with me when i see Gary in action today in repeats.

Mike is always on my mind, as well as The Bull, Bowa and many others. Those guys are my heroes, even Terry Harmon. I own one of his game used bats, right along with Willie Montanez's ang Greg Gross, who used a heavy bat, which surprised me. But Schmidt is in my heart and his stats are in my brain. 104 157 25 8 48 121 .286 - 1980

A great injustice that he is not in MLB Hall of Fame. Shame on all those with votes that has passed him by. Richie Allen played first baseman, third baseman and left fielder in his HOF (non-elected) career. He died on December 7, 2020 at the age of 78.

My grandfather worked at 21st and Clearfield (Keystone Lubricating Co.) and every year he would take us to a Phillies game. We'd each bring a box of CrackerJack with us, and he'd park at his work, tell the kids on the street trying to get him to pay to "watch his car" that he knew them and where they lived (and he did). We'd stop in at the tap room by his work for a root beer (his beer lacked the root), then walk down the few blocks to Connie Mack Stadium. Incidentally, my grandfather called it Shibe Park to his dying day in December, 1969. I can remember vividly the sights, sounds ("Hey! Hot Doggie!"), and particularly the smells. Back then, every man over the age of 21 must have been issued a cigar to smoke while watching the game. Even now, when I occasionally attend a Phillies game, I can still smell the cigar smoke. It was nice seeing my boyhood hero in action from 16:05 - 16:11 (wearing #11 long before J-Roll), Catcher Clay Dalrymple! And Jim Bunning, whose perfect game on Fathers Day in '64 was watched by my brothers and I on the living room floor, with my grandfather sitting in his recliner behind us, enjoying his Phillies cigars and his beer (still no root!). My brothers and I attended the final game. We watched from the 3rd base line as rows of seats began being carried out as early as the 5th inning. Being too small to wreak havoc on our own, some grown men helped us smash our seats in the 9th, and we had seat back slats as souvenirs in our hands when the game ended in the 10th. And yes, it was pandemonium! Each year, when I take my mom to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on Christmas Eve to visit my grandparents (Pop Pop passed on Christmas Eve), I always stop and visit Mr. Cornelius McGillicuddy, and leave a baseball or a home plate at the foot of his crypt.

Great job, so fans who don't know what obligations the owners of the Phillies faced with a 100-year lease, like me, thought the Phillies were badly managed! Like Paul Harvey used to say on his radio show "AND NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY"Another of Mr. Harvey's quotes "AIN'T NOTHING BIGGER THAN YOUR FAITH AND YOUR DREAMS"

Rollins has everything except a batting title. I say apart from A-Rod he is the greatest ALL-AROUND shortstop the game has ever seen. He’s got all 5 tools straight up. He’s an MVP and 30-30 man. Consider that Ernie Banks never had a batting title either and though Mr. Cub was a better slugger, Rollins is a faster player. Rollins was a workhorse also. Neither Banks, Tejada nor did Ripken steal bases, and that’s a game changing plus that you get from Rollins.
