I have a crazy issue with my A-2340. It sat unused for a few years and when I went to use it, the circuit board behind the tape head cover (the one that has the four normal / simul-sync switches on it) had broken at the point where the right side mountain screw holds the circuit board to the recorder. The hole that screw goes through broke out, taking a little of the circuitry with it around the hole. If all of the circuitry around that hole is the same circuit, I can repair it. But if the circuitry is complex in that area, I’m not sure how to tell how to fix it. I don’t need it to record anymore, just to play. It does play, but I’m holding that module up out of the way with tape, since only the left side screw is intact. When it moves around, it gets crackling and the channel 3 (top right) normal / simul switch shorts out from time to time. I know this is a lot to process, but you were so phenomenal with the pinch wheel shaft / hot gun repair that I thought perhaps you might have some info or suggestions on where to turn. Thanks!!!

I have a kenwood KR-3600 with a left "fuzzy" channel. It's not a dirty pot or selector switch, how can I tell if it's potentially a bias issue and any recommendations on what to check without a scope? Is there a common component that fails on these Kenwoods that cause a fuzzy channel ? Thanks
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 28 күн бұрын
@@tbone9694 bias can be checked across the base-emitter junction of the offending channel. Should be around .56v Too low and you'll get notch distortion which could be described as "fuzzy". Also, with a scope connected to the output (under load) you'll see the notch in a sine waveform

I have an Sansui 800 from this same line. And I have discovered a strange problem where I get loud crackles when humidity is high. I live in Florida and this week we had windows installed so I had my AC off for 2 days and sure enough it crackled for a day. But I lowered my AC a few degrees and after day 3 it’s working great again. Recently had it serviced and the bias was adjusted. I think it has the problematic transistors in the output boards that I should replace but as long as I have my AC on it sounds incredible.

@@thechuckster1971 here in San Diego thats called beach disease. Humidity and minerals cause deposit buildup on small signal path transistors. Right where the leads enter the body. Combine this with humidity and little leakage paths develop. This needs serious troubleshooting. Don't just start replacing parts

I actually have a video of one up it's in pretty rough shape I thought about trying to find a motor that is similar to steal the front plate off of that has a good bearing in it already then taking the original McGraw Edison motor apart and sticking the front plate from a parts fan on that motor with a good bearing in it cuz usually it's just the front bearing that's out in most of those fans would you say it's a good idea I don't know if I'm going to try it yet but it seems like it would be a good idea all I have to do is just drill a couple holes in the parts plate or the front housing of that parts fan motor and should be in business the shaft diameters are the same size as the bearing spins very cleanly on that shaft and I think it would work but I would like some input from some other people just to kind of make sure I don't completely do something stupid so let's just figure asking a second opinion before I actually attempt it well I'm going to go ahead and finish this video and head to bed pretty cool fanit was my first vintage metal box fan that I actually owned and I still have it it's still my first vintage metal box fan cuz I don't have any others but it is my favorite one because it's my first I want to do everything in my power to preserve it and make it look brand new so basically stripping the cabinet down and getting all the rust off it is probably my first step I need to take well I'm rambling and if this is super long it's because I voice type because I'm blind in one eye and my phone keyboard is very blurry to me but I'll be sure to leave you a like matter of fact I'll subscribe peace

If the distributor has mechanical advance lobes, make sure that they move freely. After many years the lubrication on the pivot points dries out and restricts movement. Also make sure that no dried grease is in the slots of the counterweights is cleaned out and renewed with appropriate new grease. Some distributors have vacuum advance pots on them and that is another potential failure due to cracked diaphragms.

I've been a sucker for boomboxes lately, but I've given up on any 90s and later cassette mechanisms, because of the chances the nylon gears are cracked, and of course if you need a belt, you can either use one from one of those bags o' belts off Amazon with built in wow and flutter, or pay more than the deck is worth for a "good", well made belt. So, I hope for a good CD player which, if it doesn't work, has a laser adjustment pot I can tweak to get it going again. Unfortunately, cassettes are dead, and the only way to bring them back, even for nostalgia purposes is to find a good vintage 1980s or earlier deck and have it refurbished. It doesn't appear anyone is going to make good cassette mechanisms anymore. I mean, I know they're cool, but like 78 RPM records or wax cylinders, you have to go back to period correct machines to play them properly.

Don't get me wrong, I love wasting time and effort on things that aren't worth it. How about those old suitcase record players from the 1950s? It can take almost $100 US to get one working, and it's maybe worth $100 only if the case looks good. (Give me a 1950's V-M record player over any 1990s cassette deck any day! You can still get idlers for those!)
