An execution is legitimate as a consequence of a corresponding verdict even without a clergyman. A murder is defined differently. The clergyman acts on behalf of the convicted person. He makes it clear to him, but also to the public, that neither the crime nor the execution should deny him divine grace. If a convicted person is an unbeliever or a member of another religion, no clergyman or, if desired, a representative of the other religion would be present. A major problem in connection with the death penalty is that public opinion often goes beyond the execution and is directed against the convicted person as a human being. Depending on the crime, the wishes range from a painful execution to eternal damnation. The clergyman, on the other hand, is a sign of contradiction.

@@jochenwirtz7506 Ostensibly, the shaman is there to offer solace to the condemned. In fact, his role is to sanction the termination of a life by the State. His presence makes those who walk a condemned man to his end feel better about their role in the grisly matter.

@@1polonium210 I wrote what I understand to be logical and correct. Is your answer based on something? I'm not convinced. It's possible that those involved feel better as a result, but I think that's more of a side effect. Clergy and shamans are not the same thing.

Warum haben Sie denn ein Problem mit der Todesstrafe, wenn ich richtig vermute? Jetzt antworten Sie bitte nicht, es könne einen zu Unrecht Verurteilten treffen. Das ist doch kein Grund. Mehr als ein bedauerlicher Vorfall wäre das nicht.

Es muss nicht gerade ein öffentliches Großereignis sein, aber so sollte eine Hinrichtung ablaufen. Die junge Dame war zwar verständlicherweise etwas angespannt, wurde aber nicht unmenschlich behandelt. Gut finde ich auch, dass das Todesurteil zeitnah vollstreckt wurde, was sich aus dem relativ jungen Alter der Frau schließen lässt. Ohne berücksichtigen zu können, ob die Frau die ihr zur Last gelegte Tat tatsächlich begangen hat, halte ich ihre Hinrichtung nicht für falsch und verwerflich, sofern sie einen fairen und sorgfältig geführten Prozess hatte. Manche Leute lehnen die Todesstrafe aufgrund der Möglichkeit eines Fehlurteils ab. Ich sehe darin keinen Grund.

Well the NFB site describes her as a woman who loved life and had a lively spirit, which totally explains her inviting a variety of men home while her husband was away and makes it extremely unlikely she used a hired hand to murder said husband. The townspeople's judgmental attitude to her lively approach to life totally makes it unlikely she was guilty of the murder for which she was hanged.
