I'm terribly terribly sorry about your suffering and the suffering of other ballet students who developed eating disorders. But... the fact is that ballet is a grueling discipline and requires not just strength of body and mind but actual toughness. Can't escape abuse either. How do you think the legends of the ballet world survived and thrived under the Soviet Union? I myself have no illusion that I'm that tough. Not everyone is. Ballet is not for everyone -- has nothing to do with talent.

I was tried in a Russian-style school. I’m not even a professional ballet dancer now, but my years in training were still significantly impacting my current mindset. They were both the best and the worst memories of my childhood, which made it so complicated, because I couldn’t just call it “trauma” and package it away. I’m still processing it in therapy, but thank you so so much for bravely sharing your story.

I just don't see any sense or meaning in complaining about all this. Ballet is a lifetime commitment. No one forces a girl or a boy to join a ballet Academy be it Vaganova or any other. If yoy want to dance on stage in the best theatres then sacrifice a lot! Ballet is an exquisite art, not some kind of getaway resort.
@sp44404
@sp44404 3 ай бұрын
to make art doesn't mean to suffer. to succeed, doesn't mean to suffer. yes, you need to do sacrifices, sacrifice time, sacrifice effort and feel discomfort from time to time, but to ruin a perfectly healthy CHILD'S body shouldn't be an required sacrifice that has to be made to have "success" in any type of sports/arts. the standards need to change, if we define success by forcing malnourishment on underage girls. you want strong dancers with long careers, not 20 year olds quitting because their bones are as frail as a 60 year old's.

@user-jy9rq8nj7q 2 ай бұрын
Because it isn't necessary and leads to short lived careers either from burn out, injury and health issue, or mental health issues that also lead to body failure. Because you can be the thin look "needed" and not be starving yourself, but uneducated "teachers" "schools" and russia especially has an obsession with shaming those who do it properly, no doubt jealousy, and have created a culture where you will feel shame for eating- as an athlete, not even drinking water is okay, then you will hold water weight from dehydration and they can verbally abuse you pretending its not their own lack of education, when they really need to go learn basic biology and sport science.

You sound like a teacher or person in charge of dancers. You make a good point, but the name calling and insults are truly not necessary.

I’m way late watching but wow to just beat your fears is one accomplishment and winning a gold medal!! Woooohoooooo!!! I love following your story and lost track being busy but so proud of your bravery. Anyone would be inspired. Your ballet skills made all the skills sing and I just saw your pre-bronze today. So fun and nerve racking. I never did a freeskate. I stopped bc I severely lacked confidence and couldn’t imagine skating in front of a viewing group lol. You and all the adult skaters are brave women! You definitely have an edge on them with your skills from ballet for sure. Looking fwd to your progress!! You were hard on yourself. Be proud and keep working even now. You are very gifted and move so beautifully. The rest is you needing to learn and hone the skills of skating over time. Practice really pays off! Congratulations!

Wow you have come so far with your skating. I remember when you spoke of why you stopped ballet and started skating. You have worked really hard to get these skills. Some of them are harder than people realize too. I did skating in my teen years and it’s hard and intense work and scary bc falls hurt! Lol it was fear of hard falls that made me stop and I had a so so coach ag the time. I did go to a summer training intensive at Bowling Green where Scott Hamilton skated but I was probably the least experienced kid there which took a toll on my self esteem bc all the other girls were more advanced and more mentally grown up where I was still very much a child mentally. So I had never done actual figures and patch skating and had to learn that from scratch and the on ice lessons were trying to promote things like toe pointing and arms being up and practicing for a split jump that I was terrified to do. Lol your jumps and transitions between elements are smooth and great. Keep working and have fun most of all!! I miss the free feeling of the cool wind of just a fast skate, the smooth turns front to back and the small jumps I did master like a half flip and bunny hop. I had some fear of landing on one foot and especially an outer edge and my fear of doing a waltz jump was just having fear of pain from a fall. I wish my mental blocks had been dealt with then. If you come across some mental blocks to your skating it’s likely ones from your history and working on that will help you work on yourself in general. I guess that’s the nature of sports but when you showed up In my feed doing a pre-bronze I was so so happy for you!! Congrats from an old lady who still remembers the feeling. ⛸️❤

I saw that you switched from jacksons to edea chorus and legacy 8 blades. Were they too high level for you when you switched? Did you have a hard time adjusting? I’m thinking about getting the same combo which my fitter suggested and financially I can afford them. I’m just worried that it will be a difficult transition or the blades are too high level. My current jacksons are too painful for my adult wide square feet
@MaryPuart
@MaryPuart 3 ай бұрын
Hi!! I never skated in Jacksons, was always in Edea! Started from their module Overture and a bit less than a year ago transitioned to Choruses. And I have legacy 7 blades for all this time. I liked Edea from the beginning but after a bit more than a year of skating overtures started to break down so I felt unstable and needed level my boots up. Chorus was the next step suggested by my fitter. I like them!! Definitely took some time to get used to new boots though, but it’s always like this

Sadly this is also an issue in many other ballet schools and companies. I have heard similar stories from Paris Opera Ballet school and the Royal Ballet. It might be even more brutal in Russia though, with less psychological resources/sensitivity. Sad thing is that very few people naturally have the "perfect ballet physique", it just isn't attainable for most dancers without starving themselves. As much as I love ballet I would not want my child doing ballet.

I feel sorry. I graduated Vaganova 25 years ago and and never had such a problems since i was naturally thin. The ballet for asthenic people not for normal girls. It can be so traumatic then you have even 2-3 kilos adds or then you misnutrient yourself trying to be in good form. I really hope so much you feel well and healthy, your life is much more important then any art

Might be controversial but it seems as gay men gained control over ballet (and fashion modeling), women were expected to look like underdeveloped girls or teenage males. Ballerinas used to be developed. None of the heroes and legends of the past would cut it today. Reject that misogyny. Developed females are not shameful. Do not live that misogyny. Head held high. Be who you were created to be. All the best.

You sound absolutely insane by the way, and are being extremely misogynistic yourself implying small chested and narrow hipped and naturally petite and thinner women are not real women.
