There is no reason to take over 20 minutes to review or react ro a 3 minute song. You are not going to understand what Aes is saying pausing after every line. You sound stupid. You need to hear four or five lines ahead to put together all the bars to be able to comment on them. You're doing it wrong. This and the other wrong video you did both get 👎 for your stupid "analysis" and I am telling KZfaq to never recommend this channel. What you do is bad, and you should feel bad. If you have any education in English language, complain to your alma mater that they did you wrong. You are bad at this. Stop doing these kinds of videos on KZfaq. They are bad.

the rings means when you chop a tree down you can count the rings of the inside of the life of the tree. so basically instead of admiring his life as a “tree” only counting his accomplishments “rings” after his death.

A coffin is also a skateboarding term, and I think Aes used to skate? I’m almost positive he did, just not quite enough to commit 100%. Gives another layer to the skateboarding aspect of the video though. Your catching onto the loner/ghost themes reminds me of one of my favorite songs of his, also from this album (probably not a good one for a reaction but I’d sure love to see it): I go from a homie to bogey and ghost; I’m sorry if you know me as both. (From Gauze.)

10:45 fully intended. I can’t remember who he said his inspiration was as a child (maybe Grandmaster Flash, I dunno) but he said he wanted to incorporate multi layered rhyme schemes into as much of his music as possible. You should check out some of those color coded lyric videos that break down the multi syllabic rhyme patterns. I’ve found patterns I hadn’t noticed for years. Speaking of which, I’d like to suggest The Greatest PacMan Victory In History (from the Bazooka Tooth album) because he has an extraordinarily unique verse in there where he uses L in the first letter for the first word, S for the second, and D for the third, repeating the pattern for at least 16 bars. I heard the song for at least a decade before I finally realized the pattern he was shooting for. Blew my mind

My guess on the “drawstring eaters” line is actual drawstrings like on a hoodie. Maybe referencing anxiety, like it’s a habit to chew on your drawstrings and that’s the type of people hanging out late night in NY walking around.

I think the rings refer to the rings of a tree. That's how you know the age of the tree, by counting the rings. The chopping down also suggests this. Chopping down a tree just to count its rings is a wasteful act in itself.

Aesop has struggled with mental health issues and isolation, so you are definitely picking up on that vibe. Some context about this song is that it comes from a concept album heavily influenced by Aesop taking a journey to South America and Southeast Asia, to include his experiences with ayahuasca. The beginning of the album starts off with a song about being at the gates of the “spirit world.” Jumping Coffin is roughly in the middle. Using the metaphor of the spirit world for a novel experience or a challenging psychedelic experience, Aesop is in the middle of a paradigm changing experience and realizing that sometimes you have to “let it in.” One of the things often taught to folks looking at psychedelics is not to fight the experience.

You do an impressive analysis for a first listen and only knowing a dozen of his songs. This track appeared on his album titled Spirit World Field Guide. A concept album following a narrator through an alternate world, including "hallucinatory images of killer eels, magic spells, and people on the run" and "anecdotes, recipes, survival tips, warnings, maps, and drawings". The image of the rabbit is used in other videos from the album. Maybe you can add The Gates or Kodokushi from said album to your list. Nice reaction.

One of my favorite things about his music is the multiple layers of possible meanings. Here are a few: 8:45 addy-address. When your location is off the map (thar be dragons was a spot in the middle of the ocean on old globes, possibly in the location of Indonesia where Komodo dragons were found) 15:20 never left the etch-a-sketch is an interesting way to say, never made it past the drawing board 16:25 retreating into solitude and doing drugs to escape Also of note: 1:45 he used rotoscoping to create this music video 20:20 it’s related to the rest of the music videos for the Spirit World Field Guide album. You’ll have to watch them all in order for any of it to make sense That line about “it’s all jazz, like an alphabet to Saul Bass. You should really look him up and his work. He invented type font, in my opinion. At the very least, he was a visionary pioneer

I really enjoy all these details, the capability of individual interpretability of his music is one of the things I greatly respect him for. Also, very cool that this was rotoscoped! Aesop is absolutely high art. The music itself is at the top tier of hip-hop (production, uniqe sound, creativity etc), his flow is also at the peak of the industry, lyricism is without question is the best of all time and trancends hip-hop into storytelling, an element where he has no peers in any medium. Combine this with the visual art that accompanies his work, of which much can be said, and he is well established as one of the most accomplished fine/high artists in history... 🤷‍♂️my view anyhow

One of the things that hit me the most about this song is the beginning of the verses, the "I used to ____, hard to admit that I used to _____." Becuse I drew every day when I was younger but I hardly ever do now. But I still can't say that I used to, because if I do then I an admiting to myself that I no longer draw anymore and that I left that behind, and I belive that's what those lines mean in this song.

It's a very powerful sentiment that Aesop expressed very well in this song. There's a lot of things that we leave behind as we get older that our brains refuse to let us recognize, or else we'd fall into a deep pit of regret.

So one thing I realized while editing - I missed one of the major themes of the song, the symbolism of wood and trees. While I referenced it a couple times, I never went in depth, especially with how it related to the music video as well as the chorus. So I just wanted to put that out there that I figured it out but only after recording this, so sorry guys.

to add to this: counting a trees rings is a way to discern the age of the tree. The chorus kind of insinuates that society will kill you, your art, your entire existence just to dissect your life analytically and place you into a neat taxonomical shelf.

The video was drawn and animated by Aesop. As others have mentioned, Rings is a great song that provides a window into his background and training as a young visual artist. Also, the video for the song Zero Dark Thirty, while not animated, has a similar concept, with the background constantly changing as Aes remains static. It's a much different approach, but a common theme.
