I thought of the same technique last night, now here it is done. I don't think faster is possible. You lay out chars 32 vertically so Y is y and X is the high byte. 16 cycles to plot. Then you can sort the pixels to change only the low byte, and self mod in zero page.

I have to admit this demo is très good. I come from Amiga world and I must admit in 1989 nothing on Amiga beats it, even Kefrens Megademo 7 or Red Sector megademo don't reach it (no inconvex vector for instance). At that time, the only very very good one (both technicaly and artistically) on Amiga which could compet is 'Wild Copper Megalo Demos' from 1988. Stunning Atari demo for sure. Btw, in this demo what is the screen with the famous first overscan feature ?

We live in a world in which, since 1994, devices for entertainment purposes can process environments with realities similar to ours.

This was even today an extremely good vector routine and in 1990 it was extraordinary. Consider this is just an motorola 68000 cpu at 0,008GHz with a slow multiplication and even slower division.

IIRC correctly, each member of the team made their own demo, and the Flying Lion demo selector was a clever alternative to a boring text menu. I remember this taking me a full hour to download the 800k demo at 1200baud.

I don't know why, but I remember this being a lot more impressive when I was young. I believe every member of the team made their own small demo, and the Flying Lion interface was created as a more interesting way of trying it all together than a boring menu. At 800K (completely filling an Extended Format 720K floppy), it took me a full hour to download at 1200baud. Today, I could d/l it several times over in a split second at modern Internet speeds.

Is this just playing a video using pre-rendered VRAM tiles or is it actually rendering polygons in real time?

This is Gizmo from Electronic Images / Inner Circle demo group. It is with great sadness to tell you all that The Phantom (Jose Commins) lost a battle with cancer on the 17th March 2024 at 52 years old. From the age of just kids in the school playground, we skipped playing football, we weren’t interested, we huddled around a computer manual. Passing pages and trying to understand the technicality together. We filled each other's blanks and most importantly evolved friendship and understanding together during a lifetime. We crossed technological discoveries and had countless eureka moments. With no internet, mobile, it was just us and later some contacts. Creativeness was rampant, hacking, in the original sense of the word, pushing boundaries, and the Decade Demo was the most outstanding collaboration with all our contacts. Self-taught 68000 assembler coder. I would use his skill to help me, from creating routines to aid with the display of an SPX pictures to de-packing binaries I could call upon in GFA Basic and that was just the tip of the iceberg. May your soul live on in the beautiful history you have created. Farewell brother.
