I bought this camera new in 2012 and have taken many thousands of images with it. But, the vid footage is just OK for 1080p, and only if on a tripod. The thing is, though, stills are surprisingly excellent with the 18-55 OSS kit lens - it really is one of the best kit lenses of that era like the Fujifilm 18-55. Pairing it with E-mount adaptor/charity shop Pentax lenses (Fotodiox - PK-NEX), the images are brilliantly sharp over 250th. Downsides are the poor screen, the horrible menu and the awful jog dial and buttons - easy to press but easy to set to a different function/value unwittingly. Having looked better at the comments now, many seem to have the same experience, but still love it!

Thanks for the idea and the video. Although I was about to stop watching early in your video as this weird cut to the cyborg? robot? came. Why? Voice was hard to understand. By the way the Audio is difficult to understand on a device with normal to cheap loudspeakers, e.g. the piano music was too loud etc. You have probably high quality Hi-Fi loudspeakers or a Dolby System, but remember to adjust and tune to the lowest standards your viewers might use :-))) Keep up the ideas and good luck and success!

You didn't do your homework, you didn't invest in the proper tools and you are disappointed with the results. Maybe instead of whining about it on youtube you should figure out what is required to succeed with film. --Nail your exposure-- Use the best lightmeter you have. It isn't the one on the praktica. If you don't have a hand held one use the meter on the camera you recorded this video. Just mirror the settings on the cameras. You have this amazing tool in a dslr you can use as a 21st century polaroid back not just a light meter. Your paying 30 bucks a roll you may not nail focus or composition every time but you can nail the exposure. At 30 bucks a pop you really should consider developing your own. Plenty of educational vids on here. I've had my kit for years but i average 8 bucks a roll for film and chemicals to process it. --Scanning-- Scanning film requires more effort than you put in. Did you even bother to align the camera and the negative? That's a deep rabbit hole with mirrors and bubble levels. What about sampling just a section of the film base to help you process the negative digitally? Spend the 10 bucks to get a replacement epson scanner holder. Spend the hours on research on how to do it properly. --you-- You are an amazing human being. You can accomplish any task if you put the work into. but if you half ass any artistic process your not going to like the results.

your perspective is too limited, as is your experience. My first rolls were shitty too. That was 10 years ago, still shooting it. Trust me, take a darkroom printing lesson, shoot medium or large format, learn to develop yourself, try alternative processes. Film provides an almost limitless experience, the only caveat is expense. Digital is just...digital. Quick and pain free but nowhere near as rewarding.

If you want to be successful with film you need to understand how it works and what doesn't work. Like a good road trip, film isn't just about the destination: The journey is part of the adventure. To have success with film, you need to understand some of the rules of photography, which can also help in your digital photography. White balance on film is fixed and can't be changed halfway through a roll. Most films are balanced for daylight or flash. Tungsten balanced films are intended to give good results under old fashioned lightbulbs and not flourescent lighting as on your shots. To shoot film right can be very satisfying, producing shots that can't really be replicated by digital, but it takes learning, especially if you grew up in the digital age.

Soory to say but..film is daed anyway. It is dead since the early 2000´s when digital came around the corner. Bevore it was a mass-product, because there was no other choice. But now..? A roll of the badest film Kodak Gold200 or Ultramax for 10$ each..or better a roll of Portra800 for 25+$..? Came on guys, this is not fun anymore! I must pay 10$ to develope one roll of film and i have to wait nearly two weeks for it. To shoot film is a pain and fun at the same time. My last few rolls wich are stored in the fridge and thats it. For me it does not make sense anymore. Happy shooting 🙂

i have to say as person who has the pratika it is nice however, there are ways to save money whilst shooting film. i also scan my own film, and develop it myself. so at first shooting film is well shit to be honest however, as you shoot more film and learn the different film types you'll start to find the films you like and good at shooting (hp5 and gold 200 for me) and ill take that one photo i love and it will all be worth it.

I understand how film works enough to get the same "look" in post. My expectations were set by photographers/filmmakers posting only their "best of the best" work, and combined with my knowledge of what I can accomplish with a digital camera and a computer, I was pretty disappointed when "the real deal" didn't hit the bar I set.
@VicerFx

@@easun I kinda doubt you can achieve the same look in lightroom for example. If you use Dehancer you may get close tho. I'm a colorist and even in Davinci Resolve it's not that easy to replicate the "film look", because of color science, recreating believable grain, halation, softness, subtractive saturation and so on

A shot that I consider my best was made on AgfaPhoto APX film that I bought for 6€. Approach to analog photography has to be different from digital. The biggest mistake of digital era photographers who just come into film - they think it’s just another part of photography and treat it as more complex version of digital. And it’s not how you treat it. Think of film photography and digital photography as making a bust from wood and printing it on 3D printer from your own 3D model you made on computer. These busts will be similar or even identical in form or size, but different in materials and require different skills to produce them. “When you “better underexpose” your digital, you “better overexpose” your film” and so on. Perhaps it would be easier to get into if you try some digital rangefinders and then try some cheap film rangefinders (Soviet stocks got you covered on this one). It’s quite an adventure.
@easun
@easun Жыл бұрын
definitely agree they're not the same and shouldn't be treated as such, but when the end results are so similar it seems pointless (to me) to walk an extra mile just to get to the same destination lol if the "process" of shooting film is more rewarding or enjoyable compared to digital, then by all means go for it! I 100% support that, but personally, I haven't found it rewarding to shoot film.
