The thing that made Clara and the Doctor so magical - was their chemistry was so tangible - and it never felt forced. I loved River Song, for example, but the force romantic aspects of their relationship was always a bit jarring -- and pulled me away from believing the natural growth of their relationship. Whereas, with Clara, we got to see the beginning, the awkward stages, the stages of growth where her and the Doctor changed and evolved - causing strife and tension - until it then blossomed into their final form of a relationship and friendship that was guaranteed to last forever. Though I love both 11 and 12 with Clara -- I DO wish we had had more time of 11 with Clara. They were unbearably adorable. Imagine, though, if 12's final stage of Clara were able to travel back in time (somehow) and be with 11. Their chemistry would have been so FIRE. Because, Clara's energy by the end of her run was very much akin to 11. I think 11 would have been head-over-heels, thrilled to travel with that iteration of Clara. It would make for some straight fire stories.

This story is an archetypcal Greek tragedy. The fates of Ethan and Vanessa are predetermined. There is nothing they can do to alter Fate. Logan puts a Christian motif over the tragedy. Satan is determined to claim Vanessa’s soul, so God sends his own beast to protect her. This battle is the story’s conflict, good against evil. In S1 E7, Satan takes over Ethan’s body and tells Vanessa what will happen. He will take her soul, she will become the mother of evil, they will “topple God from his throne” and cast the world in darkness. Also like a Greek tragedy, Ethan makes a fatal mistake, his hubris, thinking he will do her more harm with his (still unknown cause) beastly transformations than good. He’s shifted his sole purpose in life. Now Satan can seduce Vanessa and ultimately claim her soul. But, whoa, like a Greek tragedy, here comes the deus ex machina, Ethan returns! Too late. Her soul is lost. Ethan remembers his purpose: save Vanessa’s soul. She needs redemption. After he leads her in The Lord’s Prayer, he kills her, saving her soul, mother of evil no more. “Oh Ethan,” she says before dying, “ I see Our Lord.” A lot is foreshadowed in the first season. We think Ethan praying, in Latin yet 😊, is out of character. Only later do we see these moments are when he’s calling on God to help him help Vanessa in a particularly hard battle. Lupus Dei, Wolf of God, with ONE purpose to his life. When he loses sight of that purpose, Satan moves in. In S1 we see why Vanessa’s Faith has weakened. She has sinned badly. Satan opens the crack in the door. And the struggle is on. All the characters have their evil sides exposed at one point or another. Some are redeemed, some aren’t. That’s also a very Christian concept. One of the many reasons why I love this series is Logan’s putting literary monsters into the Greek tragedy with a (some would say mythic) Christian context. We have binged this series many, many times. Hubs and I just finished another binge a few days ago. Now here’s the shocker in this Comment: I teach college literature. Can you tell? 😁

I think I am the only one who did not ship these 2. For me it’s Ethan and Brona. Loved the tenderness between them. But I got to admit, that exorcism scene, their honeymoon and Vanessa s vision of a life with Ethan were everything.
