Had to come back today to get some of this heart medicine. Maybe if the world started out the day with this, and kept the feeling, we'd cut back on some of the foolishness. Most of it about nothing. Us versus Them all over the place, every day, in just about everything. Killing each other. The thing is, we are ALL actually Us, but we don't realize it. And obscure reference here, sorry: following up on Ligeti after listening to Etude#5 on the solo concerts CD, I explored some of his work. I remembered J.V. at about 2:30 from this clip. My son is 12. He has been playing, and practicing piano for 6 years. It was important to me, to show him Bruce Hornsby's masterpiece The Way It Is. He liked it immediately. He learned it, now playing the piece always. I am grateful to Bruce Hornsby for his compositions.

Just saw Bruce and the band play in Boulder tonight, and although I always long to hear the early works and his piano magic, this song blew the roof off of the Chautauqua Barn, with prolonged interplay between piano and violin, along with the others, and a driving rhythm section, very cool!

In 1993 I was in Times Square going into a club. A smartly dressed black man was walking in with a white woman. The guy on the door stopped the man and wouldn't let him go in. He said the woman could but he wasn't welcome. I was with work colleagues and went in. What I had seen didn't sit well with me but I'm from the UK and didn't want any trouble while over there. Inside, everyone seemed white, they had karaoke on, so I asked to sing 'The Way It Is' as my comment on what I'd just witnessed. During the piano intro I said "Please listen to the words" I was cheered and clapped at the end. I felt bad for that man.
