@@thefigtreeguy I thought that area was prone to freezing temperatures and it’s in ground? Were you able to find out the variety? The figs looked quite large.

@@ElevateTheProcess these trees have been there for many years and the new owners never met the people who planted them. It’s another unknown fig tree. That’s why I tag each of my trees with a metal tag that will last for many years.

Really? We have lots if bunnies, woodchucks and other animals but I never had any of them eat any of my veggies. Last year my because I didn’t cover the two grapevines birds ate all the grapes.

Thank you @pjorge8363. I subscribe to the Ruth Stout philosophy of deep mulching and makes things easier. I have eight beds where I grow onions, garlic, peppers, pickling cucumbers AND lots of figs. It’s my happy place. Seeing the hummingbirds visit so often makes my day brighter. Thanks for visiting!!!

Correct! Friends gave us a cutting near the end of the summer. The cutting was planted in a small pot with some dirt. We kept it in the house and watered it once a month. In May we planted it outside and had been there three years, uncovered and completely unprotected. We’re in zone 6b in NY.

Hey @johnmyrick2123, after the cutting roots well, put it in a one gallon pot. Every year I root about 150 cuttings and because I do this indoors and the space is limited I use smaller pots. I hope this helps you.

Hey @pjorge8363, nice to hear from you again. If the tree is planted in the ground, just water for the first year. After the first year the roots will be too deep and no watering is needed. For potted trees, you must water often AND you should fertilize with a, 5-5-5 organic fertilizer.

What's even more cool is when you find it growing wild. Where we go horseback riding in the desert there are two established patches. Some how they thrive in the hot dry high desert climate.

Yes! The first two years you do not harvest any spears and you develop strong roots. You should harvest the spears while they are small, but if you let them develop they will be very thick. You can use a vegetable peeler to remove the skin and you’ll have a tasty vegetable to eat.

In the future for this type of cuttings I will root them in water. So, first in water until you get roots and then in a potting mixture. Thanks for visiting.
