@SyrupSplash9 күн бұрын
@@tokimaheryramarozaka2116 Agreed, this is the reason I got a corne to begin with. I started with the ZSA Voyager with choc browns, pretty shit (switches, not board). Swapped them out for choc reds, marginally better but still shit. After 6 months I determined that I don't like the lack of travel; the input and travel I get from MX switches is 100% necessary for my typing satisfaction. Really ended up enjoying the split aspect of the Voyager though thus I built a corne :P

do you have your layers set up like Ben Vallack does, where he has the shift layer key hold the layer until you press a key? or are you still getting used to the layout?

Curious about your experience with dual function keys. Does the tapping term delay cause any issues for you? I like your idea of having longer per key tapping terms for modifier keys (gonna give that a shot).
@tokimaheryramarozaka211622 күн бұрын
Sometimes, it does output capital letters when I am rolling, but it's very rare nowadays. When I had lower tapping term delay(150 to 200ms), I used to have a lot of issues with the pinkys especially, and the shift didn't fire quickly enough. So I brought back my dedicated shifts. And used home row mods only for programming, or keyboard shortcuts. 250 to 300 ms is the sweet spot for me so far.

Any particular reason for choosing MTGAP layout? Keen to know why you chose it over similar alternatives with low center-column use, like Aptv3/Mak or Engram.
@tokimaheryramarozaka21165 ай бұрын
I tried both Engram and APTv3 actually, and enjoyed mostly APT, Engram felt sort of good too. A few reasons on why I stick to MTGAP : 1) Multi-Language purposes : I type in 3 languages every day, in most frequent order : English, French and Malagasy. This means that I do care where Z, V and Q are. Z was a big No-no for me on Engram. 2) With Engram, I disliked the punctuation placement : I loved how logical it was, but didn't enjoy coding with them as far as I have tried, might not be so true anymore on a column stagger, but I haven't tried Engram for 2 years now. 3) 3 years of MTGAP and speed : after 2 years of layout hopping, I just decided to commit to MTGAP to focus on speed and accuracy. I couldn't really find a layout that would have make significant increase in comfort so I set out to stick with one layout. 4) Central colum usage Vs bottom row preference : I really avoided as much as possible bottom row usage on ring and pinkies, especially the left. I had a few pains in my pinkies from using them so much so I rather use my index fingers more, though I agree K on MTGAP is something I wish was elsewhere (QWERTY'S Y). I used to angle cheat to hit Z with middle finger on staggered keyboards. Come thinking of it, maybe I'll try again Engram now that I switched to column stagger and chage the location of Z, I have my backspace there.
@RishavDhar5 ай бұрын
a2116 Excellent, great to hear your experience across different layouts over time! It's always a tricky balance to strike between index and pinky finger usage, and especially difficult to adopt a position that's suitable for punctuation/symbols as well. Column-staggered keyboard definitely helps in this regard.
@qu4ku5 ай бұрын
perfect choice. it takes some time to regain wpm. [edit: i have it on my right pinky (standard place, perfectly ergonomic)].
@tokimaheryramarozaka21165 ай бұрын
ouuuh, I tried it and yes, it is much more ergonomic than I initially thought. Now time to overwrite the muscle memory I have been building the past few days
@qu4ku5 ай бұрын
i assume you had it on a thumb. the standard right corner is close enough you don't make a hand move like on staggered keyb. the only benefit to having backspace on the thumb cluster is making it future-proof in case you move to an even _smoler_ keyb in the future. in any case, it doesn't matter where the backspace is @ 100% acc : )@@tokimaheryramarozaka2116

would you recommend MTGAP? I type around 150 wpm on qwerty and gave Colemak a try (got to around 110 wpm before switching back to qwerty). The reason I switched back to qwerty was because the word "you" was nearly impossible for me to type as it requires a really awkward ring, pink, middle finger combination. Does MTGAP layout have any of these oddities/weird combinations? Looking for a layout I can main for years to come and I don't think any of the mainstream layouts are for me :/
@tokimaheryramarozaka2116 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I would reccomend it actually, I have been wanting to try other layouts as well over the last two years... But I ended up always getting back to MTGAP. As for those awkwards redirects, there are a few on MTGAP that you should look out for : ion, being the most notorious one, as in the word "opinion" (ewasaes on QWERTY), but there aren't that many... YOU is very easy on MTGAP : QER in QWERTY. There are also a few minor inconveniences like : GL ('i), WR(:P), AU (FR). You have the equivalent of those in QWERTY in parethesis, but these are very minor bigrams that didn't make much of a difference to me. However, I would recommend you change the location of the single-quote key to be under QWERTY's C. Reaching out for the usual single-quote is pretty annoying, and is, according to its own author not optimal. After many mods, I simply took the 30 keys version, and swapped / and ' and I think it's safe to say, I won't be moving away from MTGAP anytime soon. I tried Canary, APT, Semimak, but still, I preffer MTGAP, I miss its rolls. The only layout I would consider switching for is APT. But it's so similar to MTGAP anyways.

I actually like it a lot, especially the left hand letters, even if I just got 18 WPM upon trying it, it felt really good, better first impression than Colemak and Colemak DH. But I just love the rolls of MTGAP so much : ou, ld, gh, cl, ine etc, that I use it everyday. It is just so comfortable, though there are some SFBs (wr, sc mainly) or hard words : develop, opinion. A month ago, I did not know what a "roll" was, but now it feels like home. I am going to try other layouts as well, once I master MTGAP, to see if I would love a non roll-based layout.
