I think that the answer is rather simple: Martin enjoys writing the complicated political intrigue. However his story is slowly reaching its end, and he has to come up with solutions and endpoints for his plotpoints and storylines, which naturally simplifies the story. And he has found himself in a position where he has to decrease the complexity of his story without decreasing attractivity. So, naturally what followed was a writer´s block.

The thing is, during COVID he made major progress. that's proof that he'll finish this book pretty quickly if he just buckles down and writes every day without distractions. but he's not doing that. he's heavily involved in 15 plus side projects instead. (8 GOT spin-offs, 3 Howard Waldrop adaptations, other unrelated TV-shows, editing Wild Cards and more) if he had actually been writing for 13 years I wouldn't mind so much, because writing is hard, but he's doing a million other things that are slowing him down, that's where the frustration comes in. especially when he's at an advanced age and there's a real danger he will never finish now.

I disagree with the notion of him “not owing us a book”. He doesn’t owe us a dream of spring or dunk and egg book 4 or fire and blood volume 2. But he has promised us winds several times over several years. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect somebody to make good on a promise they have made repeatedly. I check the not a blog every day for an update, hoping for anything on the book we were promised. And if he’d written 100 words a day since 2010 he would have the finished book by now. An average of 4 sentences a day is hardly rushing. It stopped being about the story for me in 2022, it became about a man making a promise to the world and breaking it time and time again

Asking someone to release a book in less than 13 years it's not asking to rush. Is asking to not fuckin procrastinate. If he had written a Page a day and the same amount of time to polish and rewrite. (1 finished Page in 2 days) Right now he should have 2000 pages at least
