If that is the case I would just remove the spent bloom. This will allow the rose to put energy into producing another bud.

Just came across this video. Thank you for sharing. I came across the suggestion to use Elmers glue for the prune cuts. I am so glad I did! The tip is saving my rose bushes! But there are not many videos about it! Thank you so very much! Great video! Subscribed! ❤

Do you cut or nip before soaking to encourage saturation? What does the bleach do? What about a few drops of Miracle Grow? Do different hybrids do better planting at different times in the springtime? Can you soak muliple roses in the same bucket? Does it matter what the water temp is? Tepid vs cool? Water level in bucket?

I trim the roots and canes before soaking. The entire rose including canes may be submerged in water. You may also put as many roses in a container as long as they are submerged. I use water straight from the tap, I would not use hot water. I hope this helps.

How far down do you cut a cane? It looks like you are leaving approx. a foot on most.

My area is colder than yours so I suggest looking at the university websites close to your area. Also a local rose society or garden center should know the best time to prune. Another resource is contacting an extension agent in your area .

I fill in the holes all the way to the top. I just leave the holes open while planting so I make sure I have a bulb in each hole.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom @judypenner7458! I'm in TN, zone 7a. We have had our first freeze and I am embarrassingly late on preparing my roses for the winter. I'm a newbie... no excuse but my learning curve. It's 12/3 today. Do I still prune and prepare my roses as you've instructed or since it's winter, is there something else I need to do? Also, I have a rose tree, it's doing well right now. How shall I prepare that particular rose? Sorry for all the questions . I would appreciate any advice . Thank you for your time. Don’t worry you can still prune your roses and mulch them. With only one freeze you can mulch anytime this coming week. If the tree rose is in a pot it should be moved to an unheated garage. And watered every other week or as needed. You don’t want them to dry out or get overwatered so just keep an eye on them and check the soil with your hand every other week. If the tree rose is planted in the ground you can dig a trench and bury it a foot below ground level. Hope this helps.

A quick question, I'm out in Western Kansas. I need to transplant two (3 year old) small Freedom hedge roses to the front part of the border. Do I do that when I would typically prune in the late winter or do I move the bush after frosts, when it's actively growing and after it's been pruned in place?

What if we don’t want our roses that tall? What height should we make our winter cuts?

Sara the winter cut is mostly to keep the canes from whipping in the wind and cleaning up the rose bed. You can do a shorter cut in the spring. In zone 6 occasionally we have severe winters and the canes turn black leaving only the canes under the mulch pile with life. I will do a spring pruning video next year in the spring. Spring pruning is the best time to control the height of your roses. Hope this helps.

Yes In the fall/winter I prune to keep canes from whipping in the wind. It also makes spring clean up easier. If the roses are short you may not need to cut back since they will not whip in the wind. If you have ramblers/Climbers or roses that bloom one time per year you do not prune them this time of year.

Thank you for this video. I inherited rose bushes when we moved into our house and and but one are still blooming and the dormant one has one tall stalk and I have been researching and reading and was still confused and scared if killing these beautiful plants. I know what I will be doing on Black Friday. I also have bearded irises and red spider lilies that need to be thinned out and 3 Asian pear trees that need to be pruned. 😂🥰

I have had roses bloom in December before but you can’t go wrong mulching them around Thanksgiving. Just follow my instructions and your roses will be fine.

Pruning the tall canes in the fall reduces the damage harsh winds can cause during the winter.

Hi Judy. what grow zone do you live in. I notice that your roses are are about 5 to 6 feet high. I live in grow zone 3 with winters regularly reaching -40 to -50 Celsius, Canadian Prairies. I have never seen roses in our area grow as high as healthy as what you have. Thanks for sharing your rose care ideas.

My climber is nearly 7 feet high. I live in MN zone 4. Should I untie and bend it back to cover?

I would suggest covering as much of your climber as described. If you can gently bend the top 2 to 3 feet of the rose into the burlap and tie it that would be best. You can dig and bury your rose but I think the burlap is less invasive to the rose.
