How to get this job

Never leave a bar long or short hanging as they will pop out if the crane operator slams a can into another can even 3or 4 containers out!!! I seen it happen and I heard of people getting teeth knocked out and unable to work again from the damage it can do
@bounce12

With the long bars use your partners foot to walk it up then if you must walk with a 16ft bar I find it’s easier to handle with the bar as close to the ground as possible then when your ready to put the bar into the 3rd container bend your legs straight down then straight up and it’s a lot easier if you’re looking at putting up 80 plus bars. Fatigue will get you if you’re the type to show off and not take tips from the senior guys!!! Also, never ever let a bar just sit in a pocket. Take it out or keep your hand on it until it’s lashed to the ship. When a container slams into another container even 5 cells out the vibration can pop a bar out and can kill somebody if hit in the right spot!!! Safety first always have a partner and production can wait if safety is a concern!!! Be present, see something say something, and stretch and flex before work helps more than even employers know. I’m always surprised when companies with a lot of injuries from intense work don’t make stretching a mandatory requirement before each shift!!!

Never been on a ship ever with those pockets at the bottom for walking the tall bars up in my 10 years. Never seen them. We rely always on 2 guys working together. One to foot the bar and the other to walk it up to vertical. Lashing a difficult ship with numerous clutter underneath creating foot hazards at 3am in the rain is always a challenge, and dangerous. Always work in a pair and look after your workmate. He'll look after you too. One person lashing alone is an accident waiting to happen. Just saying. This lashing video I'll give a 1/10. Do it on a real ship next time.

Things are a trip... Now all the guys that were gung ho about hanging rides when I first came down that we were all in eye Earl mid 20s early to early forties.. all those guys are now starting to get into two Man game if that's what you guys.... Two man gang is the guy that sets up the shoes on the lids of the ship before the containers hit takes the locks off the lids so the crane can pull the lids off that's where all those guys are going to now

Any tricks in keeping water out of your gloves when operating tag lines in pouring rain for 19 hours??
@panther105
@panther105 Жыл бұрын
Yikes...what are you controlling and why so long? Took a long time to figure out what worked for me short of those heating pads or electric gloves. Especially in Winter. First layer is a thin wool fingered glove to insulate for cold, then a latex glove to keep dry and keep heat from leaking out, then finally a long waterproof glove that reaches not quite to my elbow. You will get sweaty, but not soaked with water coming in.

Why is there no mention of the actual weight of the bars ?
@panther105
@panther105 Жыл бұрын
They're heavy!! When you first meet them and try setting up the bars it's kind of a shock. Everything on the waterfront is big, heavy and seems out to get you. The bars themselves can weigh from 20 to 50 pounds and the turnbuckles from 30 - 50. And it's not just their overall weight, but the way you have to tilt and bend them to get them in and out of the container pockets. There are tricks and techniques to making the process easier. As with anything, practice makes perfect...

100% hardworking men, no slackers, so credit to them. The employer deserves a lot more than a kick up the backside though ; so many accidents waiting to happen. The lives of the employees mean little to that company /vessel owner. I hope the workers find a better employer soon.

Now if your a lasher is that your job all day??? And do you always have a partner to work with??Also with any job do you have a partner??
@panther105
@panther105 Жыл бұрын
You always have at least one partner and you usually only unlock or lash up at most 3 "bays". There will be two more (possibly 3) workers on the other end of the containers so the same containers will be locked or released at the same time so the gantry crane can take them away. You do NOT do this all day....!! Imagine instead of the 4 containers in this video, there are 16 -18 containers (typical container ship width) and you have to do this lashing 3 times. (3 bays). Then there will be a long break and possibly you will be done for the day.... Hard work for short bursts and rewarded by long breaks.... Hope that helped..
