For me, this concerto is a musical bridge betwen the lush vocabulary of a romantic near-past and the ambiguities and energies of a looming modern age. It is brilliant at this task and delivers an exotic, mysterious atmosphere redeemed at crucial moments by the 'classic' comforts of Rachmaninoff's beautiful output. It's less to be compared to the first three concerti than to be taken on its own terms. You may want to listen to Arturo Benedetti Michaelangeli's performance of this concerto (also availabe on KZfaq) to hear it in a near-perfect rendering.

I loved playing these wonderful pieces when I was in High School...it was so exciting. The Harp was Mother's favorite, and this pianist is the most sensitive with the complicated overlapping melodic lines. Thank you so much, because now, I practice them as medical therapy in order to save my nerve-damaged right hand , compressed by a medical procedure..a poignant circle of fate.

Lennie mit den Wienern zusammen mit Zimerman ist eine absolut alleinstehende Dreieinigkeit, sowohl die beiden Brahms- als auch die Beethoven-Konzerte. Das ist schon wirklich unerreicht. (Und damals war Steinway auch auf dem Zenith...)

@paoloberti, aveva un pianoforte " truccato " in senso positivo, nel senso che ogni corda era oggetto di maniacale perfezione . Per questo non ha mai accettato di suonare altri pianoforti .Il giorno prima di un concerto, il suo accordatore lo passava a sistemare al meglio ogni singolo suono, ottenendone una sonorità che, personalmente , non ho mai più ascoltato da altri strumenti.

When I was a child I was visiting a toy store with my mother and younger brother and on the checkout counter was a display of tapes , all classical artists. I saw Brahms and bought the tape just because I recognized the name. It was his second concerto…and I was completely changed. I started playing piano a few months later and still play today!
