50, 40, 35, or 28mm all work. The 50mm and 40mm geometry wise, for quick and good composition, and enough away from the subject to get the candid, is perfect. Close in with lots of people in the frame, for that big city look, the 28mm & 35mm work fine. There are times, however, when the shot you need is across the street, or you wish to work people in nearer the edge of the frame, or with the camera slightly tilted, that the wide lens simply will distort too much. If you can keep in mind which lens is screwed-on, and know its limitations, they all work. The 85 to 135mm will work. The Lumix Leica 15mm with its 30mm equivalent field of view is great, within its limitations. In close on the street, it is fast to focus and accurate, and great for one hand shooting from the eye, or the hip, and everywhere in-between. For a lens which works for it all, like a travel carry, the 40mm or 50mm just works. The 24mm to 35mm is more limited, though within a big city, the 35mm will work up close, then again as subject with building in the background lens. A 28 is more the short ranger, while gather in more to the frame. Getting the mind to readjust to the lens in hand is the hardest part, especially if you are accustom to shooting one width. I am really impressed with your sample shots -- thousands of gray areas and nary a highlight blown out. You really nailed exposure time and time again. Purely from a technical perspective, these pics are perfect. I don't know how much was affected by the development or manipulated in the scans, but one can't put image where there is nothing but white nor recover definition from solid black -- that was pure, natural photography. What's more, your shots weren't easy: the man on crutches against a light/white wall (that blows out for me every time), the high rise courtyard with hundreds of subtle color changes, the surfing shots with sky and dark water. Kudos.

Very nice shots indeed. By the way, you could have used an A24 back so it won’t stop you at 12. Also, on an A12 back, when it reaches 12 frames- use a dark back to open the A12 back and close it. It will re-set the counter to “1” and you can continue shooting more.

I was looking at getting an F^ and I still might, I hate the fact that it takes those 123a batteries unless I get the additional grip.

Nice. I’ve decided to go obscure and get the Df - definitely old tech and still expensive, but the lens compatibility and form factor appeal to me.

Kamlan 28 1.4 is amazing. For apsc but works on full frame 4x3 little vignette when shooting 3x2. I put it up against my voightlander any day.

Honestly? These thypoch lenses blow me away. Very smooth rendering and bokeh, great sharpness but not clinically sharp. As soon as they release a 50 with 1.4 or faster, I‘ll buy one. Great review! Beautiful photos!

I am actually thinking of going the other way. I need to hold a Zf to see how it feels, but I am pretty set on switching. My main thing is that I hate shooting the 50mm (my favorite lens) with the rangefinder. Between the crop lines and tnot being able to use the whole space of the view finder to see what I am shooting, it makes it for a less pleasing experience in my opinion, compared to a EVF. Camera built, color science and so on are amazing in the Leica. I just wish they put a EVF/Hybrid in it. Full disclosure, even in film, I always found that shooting a regular reflex is more pleasant than a rangefinder.

Hey coops, great video. Loved the shots around freo, it's my go to spot to scratch the itch and get a good coffee also. I was lucky enough to pick up a nikon df for cheap a few years ago so thats my choice for full frame low megapixel filmic results. I also shoot some film, not just for the "look" of film, but to use the cameras themselves. Hope i see you out and about one day, I'd love to buy you a coffee and have a chat.

A worldly wise & more discerning Coop. I’d say Coop found the light after straying with other lenses. Despite so much noise and chatter about all kinds of rangefinder lenses, the 50mm summicron is a lens which has great subtle beauty. Keep it Coop. Your son will thank you later on

The camera looks like a Olympus Pen F in your hands 😂 anyway I also love the camera, have shot it at 1/15 with no issues and own the 67 and the 67ii. Both are great. Also, buy the 75mm f2.8 while you’re at it, it is crazy good with 41cm minimum focus. And the 75mm and 105mm are a great setup for travel. Cheers Olivier

Nikon FM2n is a superior camera. Has everything you need and nothing you don't. If you need auto exposure shooting film in 2024, just shoot a digital camera.

I sold my GFX100S II and R5 and rebuyed my M10 that I sold a month before. Leica M is my favorite for everything.

Early CCD Nikon dslrs with auto focus motors that use SD cards are the sweet spot for me. Having an absolute blast with a D50. Coming from film (F80) everything feels very familiar.

The rich color of your images is so familiar to me because I have long kept my M9 despite owning other more modern digital cameras. I don’t spend much time on post processing, so all those pre-sets mean little to me.

Nice video Coops! The M9 is a great for all the reasons you pointed out, and 18MP, if you know what you are doing is more than plenty. I used to get great shots out of my Nikon D70 at 6MP. I have an M11 and the 60MP resolution is astounding but overkill for most situations.

If I wanted film-like digital files, I'd shoot a Sigma Foveon or Pentax KIII Monochrome. Film shooters are drawn to this because it's a Leica. Otherwise it would be just another bargain bin digital relic.

I agree, no digital camera is going to replicate the tangible aspects of film. I've never really bought into the CCD mystique, though your Frontier and Noritsu comments made me think about the fact that my own OpticFilm 120 has a CCD sensor too. Interesting thoughts, though the cost of an M9 makes still makes my own Kodachrome Lightroom preset a more compelling option for me. Thanks for the video.

Guys, CCD sensors won't do any magic to your images. It's the color algorithms in your cameras that make the difference, not the CCD or CMOS sensor. If you want to compare the two, you have to do it in the same brand and same time period. Another guy here did it, two similar Olympus cameras produced pretty much the same result and they had different sensor technology. It's all in the color profile

How’s the battery life, Coop? I got an M262 for the bigger battery and love it. It’s truly replaced film shooting for me. Though my grail camera is an M-E (Typ 220), a special M9 variant.

It is my bridge between digital and film. I don’t have to fuck around with lightroom. Really handy for travel when you are going somewhere you know they airport nuke your film. I’d love to try the monochrom version.

This camera is too old and pricey to repair. just buy the M240 or M10 much better camera with great sensor!

Had them, used them and passed them on. after 22 years of shooting digital and over 50 years of film photograohy, I can tell you in all honesty that there is no ' magic ' in CCD. You can easily make an M240 or M10 look like an M9, but you will never be able to make an M9 replicate what an M10 does. No CCD will ever be able to reproduce a film look. You want film, then shoot film. M9 was a decent camera in its time, let it rest in peace. Enjoy your M9.

Awesome video man! I have an M9 with a corroded sensor, but the corrosion is only visible at f8. Since I shoot mostly family stuff and open the apature at f4 or wider, the corrosion is fortunately not visible. And I got it for around 1000$ - therefore I can live with it. Keep up the great work!

I have the M Monochrom with a Leica replaced sensor and I love it. I agree it is not a film replacement, but it does save a bit of money with film stock and developing. My color work is with my M11. I do have the M5 for my true film shooting. Great video and great shots.

No kidding this is the 4th time for me watching this video before buying a new B&W films

It's a great camera. My only camera now after years of many different ones. I am not sure it's best for beginners though. I would suggest a camera with aperture priority to ease them in more or where the settings are visible in the viewfinder. It's a professional camera too and for a beginner you can get, for example, an OM20 or M40 and they are cheaper and still use the same glass.

Bit of a challenge for you - I've only got into shooting about a year ago and I've had the usual GAS but on the cheaper side of things. Despite it's age I keep coming back to my color-skopar on my Voigtlander Vito IIa. You can find Voigtlander vitos around it for peanuts, would really like to hear your thoughts on it.
