yes you can. You can plate gold onto copper without nickel. Nickel is recommended because it is a diffusion barrier which will help stop the copper from corroding under the gold.

Interesting. I'm thinking about gold plating a 3D print to hold a hydrogen sensor to help seal the print from H2 sorption (atm pressure and temp). Probably still cheaper and faster lead time than a CNC stainless holder.

You could use a Universal plater which is brush plating which can be kind of tricky. We also have the Jewelmaster which is bath plating and that one is pretty easy because all you have to do is dip the watch into the soltion and rinse it off good between each step and you should have no problem.

No you can not buff the gold to a mirror finish. Because it is plated on so thin you will just take the gold right off the surface. We tell our customers that the surface you are plating will reflect in the gold plate. So if you have a dull surface your gold plate with be dull. If you have a mirror finish your gold will plate onto the surface with a mirror finish.

Not sure about that. We only recommend using our solutions. We do not know what the acid you use could do to your part or even your other solutions. You could test a sample piece but realize it could contaminate your other solutions or damage something. It's up to you if you want to try that.

Aluminum can be plated onto but the chemicals used in the process cannot be used on a consumer level so its possible but you would need to get them nickel plated or something before you gold plate them.

how do you measure how much plated you put on earrings. for example if I wanna put 5 micron gold plated . how would I know its the right measurement?

You would have to get it tested to see how much gold is plated onto an item. So you would have to do the calculations to see how long it would take and at what voltage/current you have to plate at to get 5 microns onto an item. Then you would have it tested to see if 5 microns actually plated onto your item then you could plate the rest once you know.

It is being dipped into 3 different chemicals. The first one being Electro-clean. The second one being TriVal 24K Acid Gold Strike. The third one being Bright 24K Gold.

thank for all your tips videos, very useful ! I have One question I copper plate steel parts before nickel plating. I use and alkaline and an acid copper plating solution. I obtain a smooth fine grain and leveled copper layer, but I can't get bright. I use: 200g/L CuSO4 and 65g/L 98% H2SO4. 0,5g/L of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate dish soap (as a ionic surfactant/wetting agent) 0,5g/L of SDBS laundry (as a anionic wetting agent) 1g/L of urea (as leveling agent) 0,5g/L of PEG (as a brightner agent) 0,15g/L NaCl (90ppm) so, it need a little buff of my copper plating with scotch britte and buffing compound. but I have try to cathodic electrocleaning my copper plated part before nickel-plating, and I had see that the electroclean can remove the copper plating... I make my own Electroclean solution : 80g/L NaCO3 40g/L NaOH 50g/L NaCitrate (complexing agent) 15g/L DBS 5g/L SLS Do you think is it possible to safely electroclean copper plated parts? I think I had use to much current (the same as non plated part), and maybe my solution is too strongly alkaline? or is it the hydrogen bubbles that inevitably strip of the plating?

We electro-clean our copper strike parts all the time and they are fine. It could be that you electro-clean is too concentrated. Try a new smaller bath of electro-clean at 5V and see if that works.

You could but then you risk contaminating the contact even more with solder. This process is to restore the circuit board so gold plating it is part of the process.

Why not 'strip' complete hubcap first, then 'activate' complete hubcap, then 'gold plate' complete hubcap? Then you don't have to worry about sections, interference, no constantly switch material, etc. Or does it take too much fime in the air and does it get oxidated then or something? And why 'strip' the chrome itself first anyway? Doesn't stick the gold to it?

We do it in sections because we don't want the part to dry out because it won't plate properly if it is dried and we move on to the next steps in the process. Gold does not plate onto chrome.
