Another great video, Ian. When I was first playing (40+ years ago), aside from gut, we only had synthetic gut (the best seemed to be from Prince).

Pickleball is only a thing and a potential threat in the USA. In the rest of the world, the threat is padel, where tennis court after tennis court and tennis hall after tennis hall is being transformed into padel courts and in for example the Netherlands, the end is not in sight yet. Many tennis players move over to padel or drop their tennis frequency. And to be fair, the occasional pickleball court here is filled with purely recreational players and housewives, while many really competitive tennis players move to padel. And I don't see that distinction changing soon. I see people watch pickleball youtube vids and start laughing, then they see padel vids and they go coool!

As long as we have the grand slams and star players, tennis will rule. Nobody saw a pickleball player and felt inspired to play. People see Alcaraz smashing winners and hoisting the French Open and want to hit their local court. They see the showmanship of Gael Monfils and they want to play like him. This will always make tennis unique. The stars are the greatest marketing product for tennis. They will ensure that it lives forever.

Pickleball has a much shorter learning curve than tennis. That is another reason for its growth. You can play Pickleball on your first day, not so in tennis. However, tennis offers a greater spectacle to watch. Pickleball matches are not engaging as a spectator.

I think tennis could be smarter with ball tech. Balls just seem too heavy, especially for damp winter conditions. I think this is an issue for players trying to develop their strokes and so gain more reward from time invested.

I've tried this and I keep getting passed down the alley. This happened 3 times in my last match. I was playing on the right and facing a left handed player who is much better than me. My partner is also better than me but has a relatively weak forehand, he returned the ball cross court and I moved in a similar way to the 5.0 net player in the game you are showing. The next I know the ball is flying down my alley at speed with my opponent saying thanks for leaving such a big gap. He did also added that I moved to early again I don't know how to fix that. I agree with everything you are saying but I can't seem to get it to work when my partner has a weak forehand. Thanks for making these videos, I'm getting a lot of insight from them even if I not improving.

Clear explanation. Bottom line..pronation should happen NATURALLY. 1) swing fast 2) don't open early i.e. 'hold your edge' like Tim does beautifully here and 3) fully extend. Try that. If you do all things, you can't 'not pronate'. Even on a slice serve.

I lose a lot to a friend of mine but his game never changes and mine has been constantly improving. I have topspin forehands and back hands that I used to slice at every chance. My returns are getting more and more accurate and my serve is picking up pace. Meanwhile he’s not changed much at all and sometimes I even let him win games so I can get more serves in

Just look at the comments below, how defensive and ignorant they are. I love racquet sports, and Pickleball is the most fun of all of them. I haven't played Padel, but it looks really fun, but it's expensive and hard to find opportunities. You're right in saying that many Pickleball players came from Tennis, but by no means all of them have quit Tennis, they just play less of it. Same is true of Racquetball players, Ping Pong players and even a few Squash and Badminton players. Sorry Tennis fans, but Tennis is just plain BORING compared to most other racquet sports. Why are so many Tennis players so closed minded and defensive? Open your minds up.

Thank you so so so much ❤️ I love tennis way too much and always wanted to be a professional but i noticed a huge difference between me and my fellow academy friends and the difference was of technique. I was hardworking from the very beginning...best in physical fitness best in diet best in recovery never threw a racket but still they all were winning and i was still doing handfeed everyday for a long long time and whenever i thought i was ready i still anyhow landed on last court doing handfeed while others were progressing and one more thing happens to me a lot-injuries, various injuries almost everywhere i knew the technique is the reason but now this video makes direct sense ( i do the best warm up and cooldown including rehab too in academy) because coaches kept motivating me and i thought i am slowly getting it but for sure i was using my body parts more resulting in overuse. Going through a very tough time now almost on the brink of quitting but something keeps me from quitting even though it sucks to be on court not enjoying anymore. I know this will be very hard to do the things told in the video but i will try. Sorry for this long post i don't even no you will see it or not but thank you so much. I wish you were my coach

Scared to admit it but I'm a pusher. I try to only play people I'm friends with because club players get so mad about it. What they don't know is I have horrendous hand-eye coordination and clumsy feet. Getting to the level where I can usually get the racquet to the ball and usually keep the ball in the court took me literally years of practice. Fancy stuff like topspin and power are waaaay beyond me. If only they could see how hard I'm actually trying :(

Good video I like the idea of swing past the ball. The problem with kick serves isn't just the technique its that if you don't have a powerful serve - they are too slow.

You're right, didn't have time to get into that in this lesson, but huge racquet head speed is needed to make a ball really KICK.

Most folks under 45 have a good shot at low budget 4.5. Jumping to mid tier 4.5 requires two of the following three, good reactions, some wheels or strength. IF you can't get to the ball in time it does not matter how good you shots are.

My area lost the mid tier club courts about 10 years ago. One super fan opened a "space restricted" (short ceiling and lots of padded posts)club in an industrial park. Lease was not renewed after 3-4 years. The usta opened a club in one of the old buildings that sat vacant for 4 years. Space restricted courts in warehouse buildings may be the only way to add courts.

80% or more of players in Atlanta playing with Penn Extra Duty, so there's not too much to think about, it works for all of us. Occasionally Dunlop and Wilson equivalent balls show up, and Dunlop closer to Penn than Wilsons. With Wilsons the fluff gets more flat and the balls fly more 20 minutes in, I'm not a fan. I did a practice test with 4 balls, 2 Penns and 2 Wilsons and they wore the same but it was as I said and didn't like the Wilsons an hour into practice compared to Penns. Agree with comments below about having the sponsor in on the testing. And btw this is definitely not overly complicated and nobody is using the wrong ones lol

On a typical nice Saturday afternoon, the local park basketball court is empty. The pickleball courts are jammed with 20 to 30 year olds and many good athletes, not seniors! In part the draw is legit coed. Pickleball "democratizes" a group social athletic outing. Players of all levels can at least be on the court together.

Great video, Ian. As usual. Your new series is soooo great! BUT... Criticising other coaches and showing Simon as an example of a bad coach was condescending and completely unnecessary. There was nothing wrong with his explanation (I've just watched it) and throwing accusations at him left a lot of bad taste. I'm disappointed. BTW, what happened to Simon's comment? It was here a few minutes ago, but when I refreshed the page it disappeared.

I'm sorry that the commentary in this video comes off AT ALL like I'm saying Simon gave bad information. An editor grabbed that clip as an example of a coach talking about the "7 to 2" concept, not because it was an example of incorrect coaching. The words I'm saying during that part of the video make it pretty clear which is which, and I didn't name anybody giving bad information, but I completely understand how it could be thought that I'm criticizing him indirectly. It wasn't the intention of the lesson at all. Yes, Simon commented saying he was really disappointed with the use. I apologized and offered to talk about it. He removed the comment shortly after I replied. I'm going to pin this comment so viewers have an explanation/context.
@UndulatusAsperatus
@UndulatusAsperatus 4 күн бұрын
Lesson learnt - it's never a good idea to criticise anybody and show your direct competitors on the screen. It's very easy to run into issues, even if you have good intentions. Your videos are well made, exceptionally high quality, you are a GREAT coach (of the 3 best on youtube in my opinion, but I will keep the other 2 names for myself). Just explain the things your way and people will immediately recognise the quality of your coaching. Technique can be explained in many different ways and what works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for another. If there is nothing fundamentally wrong with someone's teaching, better to refrain from comment.
