The only criticisms I have are #1 The tiles are wrong. The tiles from the chinese sets have a meaning in chinese culture. You can't change what the tiles look like. But you can change the font or make the tiles look very similar with the shape and the pattern. This leads me to #2. You just can't reinvent mahjong. Mahjong originated in China around a few hundred years ago. Not America. Who couldif known that this "respectful refresh" turned out to be very bad. Please respect mahjong and culture. 3/10

East does not deal out the tiles to the other players according to the official National Mah Jongg League rules. Each player takes their own tiles in the deal.

The hand gestures in this video are infuriating and the glitter pour at the end is nonsensical. The tiles look like something out of a Claire’s store. What a slap in the face of the mahjong community as well as Chinese culture

I like the design the only thing I don’t like is the dimension because it could’ve been universal meaning that anyone can use it. The dimension is the only thing that limits the varieties that mahjong can be played.

With sincere respect for those offended, I want to offer this perspective. Mah Jongg and it's sets have gone through numerous changes since it was brought to America by Joseph Babcock in the early 1920s. He transformed the game for Americans and even produced Mah Jongg sets. Today there are hundreds of sets on the market. The sets from the ladies in Texas are not much different from other crafted sets out there and I imagine that they and others had no intention to dishonor the culture. I teach and have taught hundreds of people American Mah Jongg and always stress it's rich Asian heritage. I also share that this game, like many, is a version of Rummy, and therefore itself was transformed into Mah Jongg. I would hope those offended would be happy that so many people love and play American Mah Jongg .

Colonization continues into the 21st century. Asian cultures and traditions are not here for you to manipulate, water down, and "improve" upon for profit. And you used the hashtag #SouthernLiving? This is grossly opportunistic, and overtly racist and tone deaf. You did this in the midst of a global pandemic when anti-Asian sentiment, particularly towards Chinese people is rising incrementally. Absolutely deplorable.

This is literally so embarrassing. White people really do love colonizing everything that doesn’t belong to them. This is a big no-no. I cannot understand why white counterparts believe they have the audacity to rip-off a tradition and culture that they have not been apart of. It’s insulting and disrespectful. Pure Privilege.

I think that there are some logical flaws with saying that this is wrongful cultural appropriation or gentrification. Please reply if you think my logic is flawed. My opinion: I have seen so many different forms of mahjong tiles in my time playing Mahjong of different colors and sizes depending on the style of Mahjong being played. These sets are the most unique ones I have seen and are new to me. Regardless of their statements, I believe that this mahjong set has it's own appeal. I looked at their website and saw them selling different designs of Mahjong tiles and even some that were quite witty. That's all I saw. Just a company selling modernized mahjong tiles with different designs. With all the different styles of Mahjong I'm surprised that there aren't more revamped Mahjong tiles styles. If anyone is interested in Japanese Mahjong there are literally different pieces added into the game. Mahjong has had so many different styles added to the game that there is a sense of interest when you play Mahjong with different people of the world. (Taiwan, HK, Japan, and America) A deep dive into the Mahjong tiles they have drawn. The minimal set contains the dots, bamboo shoots, and red characters most of them display different colors and arrangements. The blank board, green luck and red middle are all included with their own interpretations. The four winds are included as well as 8 flower tiles one joker and one blank tile. Assuming that they are four sets of this they have enough for a Mahjong game. Maybe not all forms but most. Are people upset because there are other people that aren't Chinese making these strides in designs? This does not feel like the same situation as Matt Damon playing a role in the Great Wall. It feels like 3 people finding a way to make money through their art. Is this really gentrification? This is a game that people play to have fun and sometimes toss money in. All they did was redraw the designs and add in some vibrant colors that may not be to your tastes. What happens when someone that is not Chinese speaks Chinese? As a Chinese American, I am proud of the tradition that my family shares in playing this game but I am struggling to understand the reasons behind the people's "long-standing traditions" perception of Mahjong. They are not dictating how one should play the game nor are they changing any of the tiles that hold value in traditional Mahjong tiles. Which part of their art form upsets the Mahjong community, the fact that used "Bam" as an acronym for bamboo? TLDR: Please enlighten me, someone who plays Mahjong, how this company deserves all this hate for redrawing Mahjong tiles and is possibly promoting a game that isn't well played outside of the Asian community to that community. I mean isn't that the point? Don't we want to bring awareness to our culture? r/gatekeeping

I’m not here to hate or bully but I will state the truth and that is White-Americans always trying to take Asian cultures and turning it into a “white trend” and adding a ridiculous price to it. I’m sorry but this has been what I’ve been seeing with almost everything for years. Take the jade face rollers. Asians have been using these for decades and they are literally $5, then white ppl will take it and add gold glitter on it and say they “refreshed” the look and sell it for $20-50. Now Shake Shack is selling “Korean burgers”. SMH. Please stop.
