Do you have any advice on sweeping much bigger people from guard? It would be greatly appreciated!
@BrandonsGym3 ай бұрын
Oh just saw your comment. What I would say is become really good at attacking their posture. Use a hand in the collar and a grip behind the elbow or on a sleeve to make it very difficult for the person to posture up and pressure your guard. Once you can do that the people will try harder and harder to posture and will be more likely to get out of good position. Then you’ll have the sweep opportunities. Does that make sense? Maybe tonight I’ll make a video to show what I mean. Thanks for your comment!

Not sure if you agree with me, but I feel like BJJ guys try to incorporate moves and techniques from other martial arts. Mainly take downs from Judo and/or wrestling. I think this is coming from the feeling of lacking other important skills of the fight which is the standup game. However, wrestlers drill this for so long and no matter how good you can be in shooting, you can't beat a wrestler in shooting. In a match starting standup, shooting against a wrestler will be blocked easily, so why bother?
@BrandonsGym9 ай бұрын
Wow! One of the most interesting comments ever. Thank you my man. I agree 100% that folks practicing BJJ are starting to incorporate things from other arts like judo and wrestling. I also agree with you that it is because those things are lacking in BJJ. I am so intrigued by your question about why bother practicing wrestling when a wrestler can stop your shots so easily. You have to understand, I myself didn’t really start wrestling a lot until I was close to 30 years old. I had this question in my head every day and I can tell you easily why you should bother. It’s because even if you don’t become the best wrestler in the world, you’ll be able to outwrestle everyone that hasn’t practiced as much as YOU. Are you ever going to be as good at BJJ as Marcelo Garcia, for example? Most likely not, but you train anyway, right? Same with the wrestling. You’re never going to regret spending that time. One last thing, it will make you more physical and a better athlete that BJJ alone. There is just no question about it. I hope this helps you. Comment any other questions we can help you with! Thanks!

Hello coach, another question. for my head outside single/high crotch; because I lead with my left leg I generally target my opponents back leg (left leg) for my takedown and then try to dump or run the pipe. My question is do you have any tips or things I should focus on? One problem is that I have to take a really deep shot to target it, but generally it’s balanced by the opponent not expecting it. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you Coach
@BrandonsGym Жыл бұрын
Great question. I actually had my right knee hurt for a while so I had to wrestle with a left foot lead. I know just what you mean. I’d say keep working your high crotch but look for ways to switch to a head inside for the cases where opponents protect the rear leg. You know, they can’t defend them both perfectly, if that makes sense. Like the harder they pull back the left leg the more they have to give you the right. Does that make sense? Tbh that is what I work on the most nowadays. Let me know….

why wouldnbt he change it into an head inside single attack sequence then? Plus head inside single is stronger than outside.
@BrandonsGym Жыл бұрын
He could switch it, but now (after the switch) we have his head in front of us with the chance to throw it under our hips. That’s what we ultimately want no matter inside/outside, we want to be able crush the opponent’s head down and cover it with our hips. The same is true if someone is attacking hard on a head inside, we can hip in and throw their head to the outside to defend. I hope this helps. Keep commenting your questions!

Just do the drill slowly at first to get it smooth, then you can speed it up and do it harder once you’ve practiced for a while. Does that help?

@@BrandonsGym Sort of: I started wrestling a month ago and my knees feel really weak from the knee pound (age 26 maybe age related?) So when I go from standing to shooting I'm trying to go light on my knee but I wondered how important you feel it is to put all your bodyweight fast onto the knee or if a seasoned wrestler actually goes light on the knee? It's definitely a noobie question
@BrandonsGym2 жыл бұрын
@@chutneyferret3569 man I get it. I’ve done almost all of my wrestling as an adult. I’m over 40 now. My knees hurt often. I think good people can go lighter on the impact. I’m sure you’ve probably already thought of it but why don’t you try some knee pads?
@chutneyferret35692 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonsGym definitely a consideration; looking at hex pads because of the pad (impact softening) and compression feature (for recovery) Hex elite has a tougher than mesh finish so should last more than a couple of months.. Another avenue I've looked down is diet specifically to avoid/ repair tendon/ ligament strain- Refined sugar= inflammation Collagen type 1, zinc & copper are great for tendon/ ligament repair Nicotine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen- impair healing That may be useful to somebody. :)
