When I heard the part about being churched I thought about the church I grew up in in the minutes from the early 1900s it tells of a man that was brought before the church for drinking and was told he needed to apologize for it he said yes I took a drink but will.not apologize to anyone for it

My ancestors were early settlers of greenbrier county. I wonder if that's one of my ancestors. The name hamilton sounds familiar.

You left out the Calloways. Thomas Calloway was my 6th great grandfather and was Daniel Boones best friend. The Calloways and Boones intermarried and were one of the very first families in the Watauga area.

I agree about the mountain independent gene. In my highland genes for sure. My wife is low country South Carolina and her ways of looking at things are much different. Mountain folk are no nonsense straight forward thinking people.

Great stories! I am a descendent of Isaac Thomas 1/2 Cherokee and the last of our family’s keeper of days past. I am In 1985 my Great Uncle Paul Thomas our Keeper Of Days Past died. As the oldest of three brothers I was the next Inline as Keeper of Days past. In 2009 my father asked me to write down the stories and get them published, so the stories will never be lost. The next morning my father was eating breakfast and died a short time later. I tell you this, because the stories are all we have, protect them. In May of 2018 I self published Lost Warrior part 1, in October of 2018 I self published Lost Warrior Part 2 Last Days of Greatness. The third is Lost Warrior Sons of Fire is a manuscript.

That's where my Mom's folks were from. The Choates and the Taylors, and some Holbrooks and Edwards. Most of the names mentioned here sound familiar because of Mom and her family mentioning them. Her branch of the family moved to northern Maryland in the early 1900's but they never forgot Sparta and Allegheny Co. I miss the great stories. Thank you so much for this beautiful reminder.❤

If you havent done a video/tour of Henderson Hall in Williamstown WV you really should! The history of it is quite substantial and amazing. And it has been kept how it was in the 1800s down to the collected hair of one of the occupants that she would keep when brushing her hair nightly. I grew up a mile from Henderson Hall (on land that was once part of the Henderson Plantation) and have toured it probably 30 times, yet still learn and see something new every single time I enter it.

Born and raised in Iowa, on a century farm, in a 120 year old farm house, in the middle of a corn field. It is common for old farm houses to have outdoor access into bathrooms and basement bathrooms, so farmers could wash up right there and not drag the farm through the house with them! 😂 The small community I live in now, 10 minutes away from my parents farm I grew up on, has a rich history of farmers too. A lot of the 80-100 year old houses in the center of town, were built as working homes. The back of my home, you can walk through into the basement bathroom/washroom. There's even an old clothes line system along the ceiling, that is probably around 80 years old.

It is possible, that as brick houses/ wooden homes were less desirable, they used tin as a design choice to change the look of the house and ass to its charm, and, make it easier to care for as the tin was easier to care for and more water proofed. This is just my guess, but dang it, I am going to go check! Really cool house! If I were rich, I’d come buy it, refurnish it All, period style, but love living in it and having family there! As well as maybe building a small bed and breakfast cottages one room houses for history lovers to visit the area, the house, and find out all I could historically about the are! Also get it listed on the historical preservation society list and, provide for its upkeep. I love old house like this!
