old school, i.e. real liquid funk, takes inspiration from soca, Latin, jazz, disco, bossa nova, breakbeat, blues and funk music with funky and jazzy sounds in general. liquid funk should not be confused with modern liquid dnb styles, because nowadays liquid dnb is mostly pop-style dnb music where the pop elements are strong and not so funky and jazzy sounds! liquid dnb is really bad Pop shit and I prefer to listen to real liquid funk. i.e. liquid funk has influences from funky and jazzy music, while liquid dnb is mostly pop dnb music and liquid dnb is commercial dnb music 🍹🍸🍫☕🥤🍇🍉🍒🍓

Maybe I’m an idiot but I feel like I followed this exactly and my sound is not even close to what I’m hearing here. Just sounds like loud laser guns.

Neuro is rather misunderstood prolly because of the rough/piercing sound. Most ppl tend to dislike it due to the enormous amount of energy that exudes.Often associating it with some sort of metal rock lol . Good for kicking up a party. BSE rocks! and all the other great Neuro artists. Noisia, Teddy Killers, Mefjus etc. Surprised you didn't feature MBeat with the all time classic "Incredible" That's a jungle track that anyone can recognize LOL Good job educating on the DnB subgenres. I still think is such a underestimated genre who gets so little coverage..At least in N America. Cheers!! 🎊

Be good to hear some tracks from the No U-Turn label, the album Torque was a game changer imo.

I would like to disagree for the most examples, for 'Liquid', I think you are mixing 3 sub-genres here: Liquid != Power Liquid != Liquid-Funk, same for Neuro, which came way later than Neuro-Funk and originated from Tech-Step initially. The 'Neuro' BSE example is clearly leaning towards Jump-Up and won't really qualify as Neuro at all - at least in our ears. Most of your minimal examples are mostly Jump-Up as well. But don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the selection, even if the tagging is a little off for my taste. We won't classify 'Rollers' as a sub-genres, it's more of a property of a track in many sub-genres, so we can partly agree on this one ;) And any of this being a 'top' sub-genre might depend on where you live as well. I really missed 'Atmospheric / Intelligent DnB' and Tech-Step so I'm hyped for part two! much <3

dont forget the top classical dnb style "jump up 96" ... for example Shy FX - This Style, Potential Bad Boy - Bad Boy DJ, Maldini - Def Roll, aphrodite - five on it , maldini - def roll, dj sappo and more more more tunes .. the bassline its more lineal, very apachi styles chopped, and rap 90 vocal cuts. Whitout style .. next steps of dnb are history but for me that style its history because from this "golden years" called dnb styles It has evolved at a very rapid pace that we already know. Can explain that styles too ?? .. congrats for that video, you explained very well the culture of dnb. thanks so much, gracias ! :)

Sorry this is all wrong :D ITS ALL JUNGLE !! No honestly this is such a subjective topic, its allmost impossible to catagorise most D&B, there was rollers in your video that has wonky basslines and sounded more like jump up, neuro I dont really care for, the Liquid was on point, the jungle also on point. The jump up today is varied so much and dabbles in other sub genres so much that some would say theres tons of subgenres. Leave sub genres to house and lets just stick to D&B :D

Thanks for this video, it helps people new to the scene to understand the subgenres

I've gotta go with hazard! Mainly because i'm from birmingham UK and i know him😅 my first rave was helter skelter energy 97 I always thought Nicky Blackmarket was the pioneer ofnplaying "jump up" sets back then. Tunes like Bad Ass and what we call Bumbaclart Sabotage, not sure if thats the official name,(its the 1st track on Blacmarkets energy 97 set.....with Stevie Hyper RIP, was so happy when i found it in vinyl) I'd love to know what your thoughts are on the earliest example of a jump up tune?

Being an old guy who started mixing in 1997, the old jump up will always be much better. Don't get me wrong there are some great tracks being released (simula looking at you) but those original twisted individual, generation dub, Hazard tracks will always beat the frog sounds of today.

Most people assume all d&b is 2step jump up and don't bother to look at any other styles. It's quite funny seeing Gen Z going mad to foghornstep but they don't even know anything about the music and have only heard a fraction of it. If you played them a Source Direct tune they wouldn't know what genre it was.

Sub genres of sub genres of genres ...... What a load of old shyte. Everyone wants to put themselves into their own little category, to make themselves feel unique. The different 'genres' of DnB are all so similar it's just DnB, no need for sub genres of something which is just a sub genres of Dance Music itself. Edit to say : before some daft gen z tries trolling, I have been a DJ since 1980, through the HipHop early 80's era, through Acid House in the mid to late 80's, through the whole rave scene from 90-94, and I still DJ to this day.

@STRANJAH dumb question for you, but it’s regarding the usage of the kit as a whole…normally I expect the samples and sound files to be universally adapted to whatever DAW you’re using and for example in this case since I’m on Logic, I wouldn’t be using the Ableton project templates, can you elaborate as I’m intrigued about buying this and other you have up!!!
