Oil pastels are nice but if i make 10 pieces of art i will have 1/2 from my colours..or leass How you guys paint with them and afford it? I saw that they go so so fast...
@lonecolorstudio

High pigment artist grade oil pastels generally last much much longer. I use cheaper brands on background. It also depends on the types of paper, for example, Pastelmat chew through the pastel sticks faster than watercolour paper.

In the meantime, I gave a try to paint a landscape oil pastel piece on Pastelmat, weird that this was the first time since 2022 Nov, when I switched over to oil pastels from soft pastels. Anyhow, you were totally right, oil pastels, especially Sennelier, glides so smoothly and effortlessly on Pastelmat, that I was shocked by the fantastick experience, how different is to paint on Pastelmat. I painted on Pastelmat before with soft pastel and pastel pencils, but I didn't find it anything interesting (vs black plakatkarton), but oil pastel on Pastelmat, that is a huge difference. Actually, I am so thankful that your videos gave inspiration to give it a try. So, I did this landscape painting on April 26 and I simply sprayed it gently with hairspray three times. And today, May 9, I can feel it non-tacky and dry enough to handle it easily. Still, I think the best way is to varnish it as you demonstrated in one of your recent videos. Thank you, thank you again and again! ♥

Definitely this is the appropriate way to varnish. I am too lazy and I just spray my works with two, three or four gentle layers of hairspray, which works most of the time, but definitely this is the proper way as you demonstrate it here. Thank you so much for the oil pastellist community.

Thank you for your kind words! There’s still some trial and error as the varnish needs proper temperature and time to cure correctly. I tried to rush the process at one time and it didn’t end well. - Emily

Your portraits are fantastic. I have several sets of oil pastels just waiting, and now I feel I can proceed as your work is so beautifully explained. I have been doing graphite portraits for such a long time, I lost my color sense. Thanks for your fine work and demonstration.

Do you like oil pastels over soft pastels if so why ?
@lonecolorstudio
@lonecolorstudio 2 ай бұрын
Oil pastel is a completely different medium. I haven’t worked with soft pastels outside of art school. I feel that oil pastel is easier since there’s no dust to clean.
@miklosnemeth8566
@miklosnemeth8566 2 ай бұрын
@@lonecolorstudio ... exactly, and you cannot clean that fine dust that penetrate everywhere, into your computer keyboard, everywhere. The other problem a major one: you cannot fixate a soft pastel, since when you spray it with any kind of fixatives it kills immediately the fine dusty particles on the soft pastel work especially white, yellow all will be destroyed. Oil pastel as demonstrated here excellently by Lone Color Studio can be varnished completely giving a matte or glossy finish whichever you like.

5:55 The blotchyness is the reason you use (heavy) textured cold pressed watercolor paper, they are far from ideal for pretty young female portraits. Hot pressed watercolor papers, however, are excellent for smoothness. For man/male portraiture the "back" side of Canson Mi-Teintes (or similar) is OK. Definitely, Pastelmat is perfect for pretty young/child female portraits, since Pastelmat has no texture at all, that is it is excellently smooth, still has invisible microtexture, which is perfect for grabbing/eating up the pastel paint. Now, I understand the reason you prefer the smooth surface of Pastelmat for oil pastel.
