You guys could use one of those lenticular sheets that people use as "invisibility shields" to better blend the screens together and hide those bezels, look up some images, I think it might work well with this setup. Would give you the benefit of not having to change the colored bezel covers for different scenes.

How are you controlling the depth of field on the screen to look real to the camera and somewhat accurate for the Lens you are using?

Modern spin on classic, traditional rear projection. Used in Hollywood since the 1930s. Battle-tested, tried-and-true.

Why doesn't the refresh rate of the TV clash with the camera or is that only with CRT monitors?

In the 80s we would conversations about this. ILM has billions and can do cutting edge. The real power is when tech gets into masses. A few good tvs is pricey, but this is magical stuff we could only dreamed of. This one of them the most transformative techs in the business that I get giddy about. I use it whenever we can because it’s easy and cost effective.

So why not use a short throw projector instead? Basically a modern rear projection. Seems like it would give you way more control and the size without needing any bezel hiding.

I like to think that people will actively seek out genuine art. Perhaps live performances will see a resurgence. Or maybe nobody cares and just want something they can nod their head to, regardless of who or what created it. I'm in the Vanlife KZfaq niche, so I've seen and met a lot of real life humans who turned out to be fake way before the AI boom.

To solve the bezels in more scenarios, why not just use 1 tv in horizontal position and bring it close enough to camera to fill the BG? You can even blur the image _itself_ as much as you need to make up for the reduced in-camera blur. What you did with the 3 tvs + bevel hiders obviously worked just fine, but this way you wouldn't have to deal with that every single time you use this CU setup.

Take it another step further, why bother with a full frame for the depth of field, when you can just blur the video behind you?

Haha I’ve done similar with a few TVs for my Christmas displays disguising one as snow falling outside a window, one for a fireplace etc, same for halloween with ghosts floating up and clouds passing a full moon

When I was at a shopping Centre in Perth, Western Australia; there was an old boomer lady using a midjourney discord bot with a reface type program to put peoples faces onto images, and then print them out on canvas. I was disgusted that these digital art styles were being sold when we all know midjourney is dodgy with using other artists work. Although I did think that these people are happy that they are getting a product they wouldn't have been able to get otherwise, it's still stealing though imo.

Mate this is all I think about too. So freakin’ scary that it’s impossible to foresee us being little more than AI curators at best for a short while until it overtakes every role. And then what? Are we really going to be happy reading a book written by AI or watching a commercial or film made by a computer? To me it seems void of soul and yet will most care? Probably not … until we’re left rudderless without meaning thinking how did this happen?

I’m curious how much more it would cost to have a screen that large without bezels. Or, could you hide them with video wall panels, wouldn’t be flush but maybe would still be ok?

A plugin may exist for this already, but if not, I think it would be great for these setups.. natural light coming from outside (like a window) is disturbed by thermal aberrations in the space between background, foreground, and viewpoint. Additionally, movement like cars and birds, clouds and dust, exist. Our eyes pick this up and our brain mostly filters it out. However, when it's not there (i.e. with a static image), our brains recognize something is off even if we don't fully realize we're looking at an out of focus static image. The theoretical plugin would add in random noise and slight distortion to create a general sensation of movement across the scene. If a user of the plugin wanted more detail, they could draw a line over streets and the plugin could insert dummy cars driving by. One could enable things like birds and clouds in the sky, or bugs swarming closer to the viewpoint. Of course stock footage exists which can achieve this, but there exist more stock images in the world than stock footage. I think such a plugin could make this idea of TV backgrounds much more believable and more appealing to clients.

Dumb question, but: why use TVs and not a video projector? Like one of those short-distance projectors. I understand that a projector doesn’t have the same maximum brightness and contrast as a TV, since you’re adjusting the lighting for the foreground anyway, I’m assuming this could be compensated for

As a photographer, filmmaker, voice-artist and soon psychologist I agree with what you said. But I think there comes a point when people realize that AI can't or shouldn't replace everything: Humans need meaningful occupation. Humans need recognition for their work. Humans need challenges. Artistic creation includes all of this and will therefore always be an important part for human happiness.

My prediction is the world will change and live performances will become huge. Livestream is where video may be going and there may be a huge live theatre resurgence. Look at film. It's been coming back for years. Human culture will evolve in a world where nobody can believe their eyes unless they are actually there.

It still looks composited, though. The talent doesn't look like it's lit by the background environment. I suppose it's faster, but it sure doesn't look any better.
@cerumen
@cerumen 2 күн бұрын
My understanding is it’s an alternative to compositing for productions that do not really require 100% realistic lighting and want a quick turnaround, although people claim this method also works well for ‘outdoor’ dialogue scenes like driving, the use of video walls in Mandalorian (I guess natural daylight must be easier to approximate in those setups?)
