This production is a very sad, misguided attempt in a continuing series of French attempts at Sondheim. Performers left adrift, poorly directed - badly costumed & wigged. Several moments salvaged by an actor’s instincts or singing/dancing abilities. Liz - simply lost and miscast (being Mrs. “My Fair Lady” heiress) must be nice as far as being cast for years. She is off key in her biggest solo. And why is there a giant, beautiful grand theatre curtain rising and falling (Pre “Loveland”) during the first act on nearly every single number? The theatre is supposedly being torn down - even prior to this reunion. Not good. What a mess.

Most have no clue what they are playing Or singing. Would be the same for US attempting a truly French show. Example : Great star presence from Carlotta - but she has no idea what she is doing as the ROLE with the song.

Follies - in France Nothing like what “FOLLIES” means in the US as far as the original and its concept. This is a visual pastiche rather than an exploration of the failure of the American Dream and its “Follies” for the WWII & the parents of what would become the “Boomers”. These characters supposedly met and/or performed from 1917 - 1941. Very American approach that is sorely lacking here, despite some very worthy individual moments.

Really? What does it mean to have him strip to having his shirt open to the navel? The original includes a huge vocal/dance solo that has yet to be matched. The whole approach doesn’t work. It plays like a concert version. Which might have been the better choice.

Being an "American", much if not all of the humor was lost to this audience. The performances were solid though. The decision to let Broadway Baby be performed to its end by itself was a long time coming - yes!! "Loveland" sets/costumes were stunning with a touch of Moulin Rouge et Les Folies Bergere.

This is a wonderful modern interpretation of a classic. I do miss the gorgeous period costumes and sets, but the performers make the story live anyway. Bravissimo!

I don't get the idea of doing a modern interpretation of something like the Arthurian legend. By definition, it is not modern. It does not take place in modern times. It makes no sense for something like this to take place in modern times. Let it take place where it was designed to take place.
@christinewells-leddon92874 ай бұрын
@@warblerab2955 I tend to agree; I want my Phantom to be in a realistic 19th Century opera house, and my King Arthur to be in a Camelot that looks like the castles in England. Unfortunately, those who are putting on the musicals these days are reducing overhead costs by cutting the sets, props and costumes in the name of "modernizing." The current production of Camelot on Broadway is a good example of this trend.

Yes. The conductor was distracting I like the presentational approach. Tricks with multi screens is a bit unnecessary. Loved that Mirror number was sung AND danced by Stella. Actress singing I’m Still Here had problems. Tripping over her skirt during mirror number. Forgot a line during I’m Still Here. I think her “French” approach didn’t work. Four leads and their younger counterparts were excellent. I’ve watched others. But for some odd reason I felt depressed when it was over. I think because some of it was “too real” in context of “presentational” approach. ie. Phyllis’ horrific attack on Ben being seen in closeup. I don’t understand Buddy insulting Sally. Where did that come from?

@roma65095 ай бұрын
I was Nimue in the 1980 revival, which starred Richard Burton . . . until an iron bar, weighting the bottom of the curtain, landed on his shoulder . . . after 5 precarious weeks, Richard Harris came in and took over the role, doing it for several years to follow. Richard Burton passed away two years later. I hope this eliminates any confusion. Blessings & Love to All Jeanne Caryl

How did I miss this PBS production when it was originally broadcast? So happy to be watching this video as the newest revival of Camelot is preparing for opening on Broadway. The decided lack of scenery/stage props makes the music even more the star of this production! Actors, via the script, paint the scenery for us. It will be interesting to hear how this script compares to the "newly re-imagined" script. All these years later, the message of this story remains relevant...and I have some surprising tears at this realization. Thank you for posting this video...much appreciated!!
