It can be really tricky to get a foot in the door in the industry but I'd advise joining an institute like the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM). You could go for the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) but they have a bit of an ex-firefighter bias. The IFSM offers some mentoring opportunities where you can go along with experienced fire risk assessors and shadow then for the day which can really help your experience. I'd also recommend just contacting some consultancy firms using their online forms with a copy of your CV and just explain that you're looking for a trainee-level position. Some firms you could look at are: Tetra Consultaning EDP UK EEUK Ltd Hydrock (Now Stantec) Momentum Health & Safety Consultants Zeta Services These are all firms where I know people who work there and they're all nice people and seem happy with these places. I also work at one of them lol. The only place I'd advise you to avoid like the bloody plague is Ark Workplace Risk. They pay well but they're not very nice people and the workload is insane! Another place you could try is Quidvis Risk. They're not a bad bunch of people but they do all their assessments on an app which is not really conducive to a good risk assessment as it's all drop-down and pre-written answers. A good place for entry level and getting used to the process of simple risk assessments but definitely not a good place to develop as a competent risk assessor. I hope that's of some use mate, and good luck!

I love Dekker’s work and am thankful for all he’s done to move our industry forward. While he didn’t do it alone, he took on battles that no one else had the guts to face. It’s funny how the people who criticise him usually haven’t read his work and don’t really know what they’re talking about. Thanks a lot Prof. Sidney Dekker🤩

@@RebrandingSafety I think that some people genuinely don't believe that there are lessons to be learnt from fables or fiction or even history for that matter. When I have facilitated training on investigations, I use Space event (Apollo1, Challenger, the Columbia disasters along with Apollo 13 along with the Kobioshi Maru). And I did it because of a personal passion and I saw those were more about the people and situations then the scope or location. At first when I started talking about this with a group of miners I was looked at as some weird Sci- Fi Nerd, and I was generally worried about receiving a wedgie. But, as time goes on it was those scenarios that started to help me build some trust with folks and forced them (at least I hope) to think more along the lines that Dekker talks about in towards a Just Safety Culture. One where we don't always blame the dead guy, we learn from the past and work towards a well earned bigger bonus. Anyways, keep up the good work I am quite enjoying your channel.

Can a person be working as both HR and Safety professional at the same time?
@RebrandingSafety2 ай бұрын
Whilst I would say that I personally am not a fan because at some point HR would have to sack someone, and that's not very helpful to where safety needs to be. I have also seen HR and safety work well together in a joint department, so I suppose that it's more about the attitude and culture of the team/person/business

Thanks for your comment. I am inclined to disagree whilst there is a lot of stupid shit done in the name of safety our legislation is actually quite good in my opinion compared to others. (Even though not perfect) There is a lot of flexibility and even in our civil law the "ordinary reasonable person" test is literally a test for the so called common sense. So the law actually encourages common sense.

This is something I see in most of the clients I go to. A good example I use is a tub of decorators paint. An employer has two employees painting rooms in a house. Let’s say Joe Bloggs and John Smith. Joe Bloggs has to take some of that paint and get it from the tub on to the bedroom wall and he has been told to use the sprayer. John Smith has been told to take some of that paint and paint the kitchen using rollers and brushes . How is that paint going to affect that person from the moment they open the can to pouring it to getting it on the wall to finishing the job and sealing the can back up and what are the protective measures that can be used for each stage ?
@RebrandingSafety6 ай бұрын
Great example. The difference between spraying and rolling will be significantly different alone!
