Christmas Day's on the 25th, and in Czech it is called Boží hod. Štedrý den is on 24th - isn't that called the Christmas Eve?

A really good knowledge of our history! Well, the great Karel Čtvrtý had actually a Czech mother from Přemyslid dynasty, so there comes the missing link.

It is more about the potato salad, and the rest of the stuff. Also, there are regional differences, for example we have a Slovak tradition of the kapustnica soup in our family (heritage from our grandmother) and that one truly is the highlight, fragrant and rich. Some regions eat a pea soup, I believe. Also, many people opt for another fish than carp nowadays. Many families decorate the Christmas tree together, the day before or even during Štědrý den.

I think about the air, there are two types of Czechs. Ones who love fresh air and keep opening windows (like me), and the others who totally hate this, keep closing windows, and prefer "teplíčko a smrádeček". And about rohlíky - there are many ways to stuff and cover them, and we use all of them, including the "American" style.

Well, I am not sure if there is really any uniformity regarding kissing, I met quite a bunch of people who do not kiss at all, then some would kiss once, some more than once, and some hug you like a bear, but no kiss, etc...

For rainy weather - V Brně se také říká, že je "venku Čína".. there is also rather old fashioned "venku se čerti žení". And we also say things like "zmrazit (někoho) pohledem" and "chladná jako led" (but more idiomatically "studený jako psí čumák", that should be purely Czech)

I think it was the historian Tony Judt who said that the fact that the divorce went so smoothly really shows that the two nations were never really one nation. I think it’s good that we split. And thanks to the EU and NATO, it’s really easy to be two smaller countries. We are close but we are also different. Probably more different than some other close European countries, like the Scandinavian countries. I think it’s perhaps a similar degree of difference like between Westphalian/Northwestern Germans and Bavarians/Austrians: they speak similar language, were part of the same state and understand one another better than anyone else from outside, but politically and culturally they will always be very different.

Jakým právem si čt a čro uzurpuje tyto HANEBNÉ výpalnické poplatky? Bude to jednoduchší skontrolovat a hlavně to bude SPRAVEDLIVÉ! Taková svistva nepáchali ani komunisti. Koukám, že z Česka se stalo pod vedením fialy a ostatní vládnoucí nomenklatúry fašistické království krále kazisvěta a knížete ignora...

You have to make the wide noodles yourself. It is easy. Coarse flour (hrubá mouka), egg, rolled into a thin pancake and cut into noodles. That's the next level.

I think Czech system same as in other European countries and Universities here in Southern African countries too. You start your major from day one. At my University in particular (MSU) you could still "shop" for Modules from other Departments or in other Faculties but your major was chosen from day one.

The same problem over and over again that I find gradually insulting. You're calling Praguers Czechs. The difference between Prague and the rest of the country is the same as Moscow and Rural Russia. Almost different planets. Praguers are notorious for not doing anything at work while being overpaid. Seen it first hand during my early attempt to fit within this very tightly locked society. Anywhere else in the country, there's a golden rule for any HR specialist: when replacing a Czech who just quit, you have to hire two foreigners, prefferably for a minimum wage, to keep the volume of work steady. Czechs are very hard-working people, but we have a no bullshit philosophy - we turn up, do what needs to be done, and go home. If we're done early, we go early. If we can't go early, we spend those two hours sitting at our common rooms, because no Czech will ever voluntarily search for things they could do. The boss really has a lot of work, coming up with clearly defined instructions about what to do to the letter. Another speciality is that no Czech will ever want to learn new things on the job, because we know very well that after we learn it, there's gonna be no one else doing it but us. And since most of us are paid hourly, it means more pointless work for the same money. However, if that knowledge comes with a raise, we are the fastest to learn it.

There's just one big mistake. In Europe AND in Canada, we make the distinction between NUDISTS and NATURISTS...not "NATURALISTS" 😆. The naturalists exist, their main interest or hobby is to study the nature, that is, plants, flowers, animals on an amateur or scientific basis. Nothing to do with nudity ! "Naturist" doesn't seem to be a widely used word in the USA. On the contrary, near Toronto, Ontario, there's a huge resort named "Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park"... I'm an European, living in Belgium and a naturist...not a nudist. You also speak about breastfeeding in public and the exposure of female breasts. Do you know that, in the State of New York (not only NYC), people of both sexes are allowed to walk "topless" in public areas, to be in accordance with a NY State law against sexual discrimination ? US laws about nudity are rather strange, though European laws (and customs) differ from one country to another, and even within the same country...

I have spent a lot of time in Czech Rep. My wife is Czech. Czechs are still confused. They dont have a clue about who they really are. I like this but they are easily manipulated. At the moment the Czechs are a vassal state of the US.

Sorry. The word regarding being nude is not 'naturalist'. It is 'naturist'. We are naturists for around 30 years now and really do not understand the fuzz regarding nudity is about. For sure I will not undreas into my undies. Or I am dressed, or I am nude. Nothing in between.
