I once got the chansey lucky egg, after easily some 300+ runs of the safari zone. But I never caught a dragon fang dragon air, golly I did not even know know about that item until I had beaten it many many times and watched videos on KZfaq about the game😂

I'm currently working on a special living dex and so far all of these methods have had a chance to shine! :D It is the most fun I have had with pokemon in years (with the exception of a few huge grinds). It's so satisfying finding rare and unique mons and seeing the boxes get filled one by one

If I recall correctly, outside ability effects only were possible in emerald. Ruby, sapphire and fire red land leaf green don't have thay technology yet aside from pickup.

1% Dragonair? Pfft. I've encountered so many now it's a little absurd.

Gen 3 fire red/ leaf green, emerald and colloseum machops could learn mimic via move tutor. I believe in gen 4 when a machoke from gen 3 evolved there was a chance to gain the new ability ( no guard) thus a possible doubles ability to gain it.

But, have you heard of simple bidoof? The only pokemon that bugger failed to take out was Cynthia's Garchomp. Then I evolved it, taught it rock climb and had the most disgusting fight of my life.

Still hunting for the dragonair lol. Managed to find a shiny before getting halfway of the expected odds of catching a dragonair with the dragon fang.

Believe me or not but when I was a kid I encountered a shiny Chansey I was so excited when I did…. However I forgot that these Pokemon can flee in the safari zone so when it did I thought to myself it was a glitch or something 🤣 I couldn’t accept the fact that I lost the shiny chansey lol

Was Nuzlocking and found a Zigzagoon (McZagger), Taillow (Cassie), and Shroomish. Kept all of them with my Torchic (Nugget) and got fat but not far enough before my console died and I was dumb enough to not save since the second gym. 🥲 But yeah. Early Pokémon can be insane!

I'd rather deal with Dragonair than Chansey any day! Fishing might be more "involved" in Hoenn but in FRLG is a background kind of process

While TECHNICALLY it's 100x rarer to get those pokemon holding those items, there's nothing inherently special about them. You could just give your chansey a lucky egg, or your dragonair a dragon fang.

At least you don't have to walk around to encounter Dragonair. So technically you save time and money by waiting and only using safari balls on that pokemon exclusively. Of course assuming that's all you are hunting for.

I am one of those lucky people that found a lucky egg on the first chansey i caught on my leafgreen save file. Not the first chansey I found, the first caught. That I think is the luckiest I have ever been when playing pokemon.

There are other Safari zones to cover! Rock smash Shuckle in Emerald, the absurd effort and patience required to get the rarest Pokemon in HGSS, the annoyances of navigating the Great Marsh to find Pokemon whose location randomly shifts everyday... Definitely enough material for another short or two!

I was so very lucky in my most recent Leaf Green file. Managing to catch a shiny Exeggcute, a Dragonair with the Dragon fang on the very first one I encountered, and only spent about 6 hours grinding for the Chansey Lucky Egg. Then I started a new save on Emerald and encountered a Shiny Poochyena before fighting the rival, so no Pokeballs.
