I hate when people say “You don’t look Métis” like not everyone who is Métis looks the same

Just in case there is confusion. When she says shed is the length, this is not so. The SHED is the SPACE where she puts the weft threads across the long threads, (long called Warp). Passing the Weft thread to the left through the SHED. This is a lovely instruction for finger weaving which I have never tried as other videos left me confused. I must try this now. Thank you very much.

Fingerweaving? I've not heard this word before. I get that you're saying there's no loom. I think everyone else would just say "handwoven.". Unless I'm missing something about the technique. Fiver arts techniques are as intricate as they are diverse. I wonder where the cultural use of "fingerweaving" comes from. I am not quite getting the cultural significance of the term. But as you describe it in the video, its the symbolosm of the worn woven textiles that seems most culturally important. I'll watch the process again.

Hand woven cloth is done on a loom which is totally manual, therefore it is called handwoven. This is how all material was made for such a long time. So, as the word already exists for something specific it would be inaccurate to call it hand woven. These looms were often quite large, men could weave a wider piece of fabric as they had a longer reach.

@RobespierreThePoof For many years all fabric was woven on a wooden loom which was totally manual. The loom was as wide as a person could stretch out their arms to push the shuttle through the shed and back and forth. This was called hand made material. The same name could not be used for this new technique so finger weaving it was.

In the heart of Alberta, where the prairies wide, The Métis gather, with pride they stride, With the beat of the drum and the fiddle’s song, At Alberta Métis Fest, where we all belong. Alberta Métis Fest, where the spirit flies, With the dance and the song, under open skies, In the warmth of the fire, and the stories told, Alberta Métis Fest, where traditions unfold. With the jig of the dance and the joy in the air, We celebrate the culture, with love and care, From the elders’ wisdom to the children’s cheer, At Alberta Métis Fest, we hold all dear. In the colors of the sashes, and the sounds of the night, We find our connection, in the soft firelight, With each hand we hold, and each laugh we share, The Métis spirit, in the cool evening air. So here’s to the Métis, with their heritage bright, In the unity of the fest, we find our light, With the echo of history, and the promise of tomorrow, At Alberta Métis Fest, we share joy and sorrow.

Here I am as an Australian with tears in my eyes, the shame of a nation and to be honest the govt was doing the same to our Aboriginal and half breed children in Australia.

That's rich because you don't even recognize your own people in the MNA. I have never qualified for any programs nor was I granted harvester rights. Might want to clean up your own backyard first before throwing stones.

To bad you don’t recognize any other Metis in Canada. I am Metis and hold alberta Metis status. But As retired military veteran who decided to retire in Alberta, I lose all my Metis rights and I am not recognized as Metis with rights , by the Alberta Metis council .

RIP Joseph Rousseau (chippewa/cree and French) metis from North Dakota. Our ancestry goes back to red river settlement and Pembina. He is buried at haskell indian residential school in kansas. He was taken at 6 years old and passed away at school as a teenager. I cant imagine what he went through getting sick and dying so far from home in a foriegn land without his parents. Hopefully people read this comment and keep his memory alive.

Love seeing the piece on the solar farm at Metis Crossing. It would be great to see a program to help MNA Citizens implement solar at home. Imagine the impact we could see as a nation if citizens could also directly contribute to climate change in this way.

Being Metis isn't about how you look, it's about saying racist stuff about natives and then saying "I can say that though because I'm part native".

What, did you hear that one time? From one person? We’re a nation of over 500,000 people with our own history, language, and alliances. We were a part of the iron confederacy. The Sioux and Dakota respected us too. We’ve earned our rightful place here on the plains as a people. Do your research seriously! Most of us just want to reminisce about the old days and hang with the family just like you. A lot of us show up and protest for our First Nations relations too. You need therapy or something, go fix that intergenerational trauma instead of lashing out at other indigenous groups before you pass on that pain to the next generation.

Post more jobs to work for the MNA in Calgary, Lethbridge, Red Deer and Medicine Hat. Not all Métis live in or within commuting distance to Head Office in Edmonton. This would open up more opportunities for METIS employees!
