Thanks for this. Great refresher! I did a degree in stage management and tech production over 20 years ago. I’ve been teaching media and computer science the last 20 years, but have stepped back into shows with a school production. Great to see what I was taught 20 + years ago hasn’t changed. Very good video describing what took a long time to learn. Thank you

My favorite question recently was "what do you think the job entails?" I thought it was a great way to get inside the candidate's thought process and make sure they have a realistic picture. It was a TD interview, but still

This is so awesome, the first show I ever stage managed (and called) actually was this show a couple of years ago! Watching this series in preparation for an interview for a stage management internship this week. Thanks so much!!

I know this video is 3 years old but I was asked to stage manage a show for community theater- I'm really young, and have only done two shows as an ASM. Should I accept?

Great video! While I have never worked on a ship, I have known several people who have (performers, musicians, tech). One friend could not get over the seasickness issue and ended up having to leave their contract early. One person ended up having to visit the ship’s medical several times for STI meds. 😒😒😒

Do you ever include a line for choreography specified in the piece, or do you leave it out like the songs?

Thanks for these really helpful tips. Do you know who's job it is to update the script if the dialogue gets changed during rehearsals?

Great question! It’s sort of both the playwright and the stage managers’ responsibility. Technically, the stage manager is responsible for maintaining the prompt book, which includes “accurate playing text” or something like that (I am paraphrasing). But the playwright is the one responsible for actually making the changes, obviously. Typically it’s just a conversation between the SM team and the playwright, some playwrights are happy to hand off the responsibility, others want to keep control of their script so they update it. On major projects (broadway, etc) there might be a “Script PA” who is a member of the stage management team who’s whole job (or primary job) is to maintain the script and track/distribute changes and new pages. So, like everything, the answer is “it depends”!

So... I came here to learn some things about stage and prop management (and THANK YOU for THAT awesome info!!!) but I just want to say - you're explanation and instructions of how to use Excel for theatre-nerds is amazing! I've been resistant to using it for decades, and you've made it easy.

Hi! For these, I just did an approximation in PowerPoint with shapes and outlines. But for real shows, I get a PDF copy from the production manager (usually ask for any text and annotations to be removed) and convert to JPEG online!

Thanks, Kent! I've been a board op with my company for almost 2 years and the managing & tech directors entrusted me as the Sound Designer for our current production. So I'm heading into my first tech period starting tomorrow as a full production team member...yikes! Your video really helped calm and center me (as has our TD, who's 100% cool), so I wanted you to know I appreciate your videos a great deal.😄

The way my jaw was dropped this whole video. I'm graduating undergrad soon, as a training SM, and have never thought to just.. retype the script. I have only ever scanned my little booklet and resized the page to give myself enough white space for blocking and cues. This has revolutionized the way I create my prompt script. This is so smart. Thank you SOOO much for this. My university only has one SM class and I'm mostly self-taught just by experience on productions at my University, so your series has been incredibly helpful and has taught me so many new things already (watching this is what I'm doing for fun on a weekend night LOL).

So glad it’s helpful! Definitely cannot take credit for the idea of typing out a script, that’s long been a practice in some SM circles!
