For the $300 range, I'd go for a perpetual license of Musio which at the time of this video was in the $299 range, and muscle out any cash possible to go legit on Reaper over the next 60 days... All Cinesamples catalog at your fingertips.

Nucleus sounds really good, but it's not complete, it misses a lot of BASIC articulations, like staccato and trills for the solo instruments.

@@KevinKuschelSpitfire BBCSO Core, I heard some annyonances about the brass power and string legatos, but articulation whise, not only does it have those, but also flutter tongue and multitongue for a Solo flute. Also OT Berlin Orchestra, but it's expensive. No library is perfect of course.

I disagree with the majority saying this is cheating/squanders innovation. I think that if you have enough music talent and imagination, you can use these as a stepping-stone and perhaps inspiration for great works. Just my opinion, though.

Thanks for this video. Although it is some years old, it's still vary valid. Actually, I own Miroslave, and yes, it is not that good. What bothers me most is the articulations are not working together (switching gives completely different sounds) and the legato is completely ridiculous. It has some nice sounds. However, I bought it for around 40-45 euro so for absolute beginners who do not want to spend much money or just try to see if they like composing or working with such libraries, well try it out. A few days ago I bought EW Hollywood Opus edition and this is clearly a big step up. Now SSD's are cheaper, 1 TB of download is also not such a problem and installing only needs to be done once. HOwever, the price is now (in retail) 275 euro so for taken into account is a great price. Since the main reasons you put this not on the S lane was the big download, and the high price.

I have Orchestrator by EW and although these type of tools are interesting i never feel like its doing exactly what I want. So then i end up spending all my time fixing things. All while realizing i could have just played it in myself at that point. It can be useful for inspiration but i rarely use it in the final mix.

Whilst the drums sound good, I've heard them many times before. The price point seems to hinge on the name. There are far less expensive and more versatile options on the market that aren't locked to NKS format, and have tempo sync.

Oh man I wish I had known this years ago. I started with BBCSO Core, which I find pretty useless for cinematic/epic music. The shorts are drenched in reverb, the longs have a slow fade in... sigh. Then I bought Metropolis Ark 1, which is great, but a very specialist library. I got EW Composer cloud and I like the Hollywood orchestra sounds. They are HUGE on the hard drive space and CPU usage. I just got Nucleus Lite, and I love the sound and playability. I'm upgrading to the full version ASAP and it'll be my workhorse library. I hope I'll still get use out of the others for flavor. I feel like I threw away so much money. If I could do it over, I'd start with Nucleus, Cerberus, and expand out from there as I need. Cheers. Great video!

Yes. For some of them you need the paid version of Kontakt. Others run in the free Kontakt, or the free SINE player or the free Spitfire player. I gave the information for each instrument. All of these players will run in Reaper.

You need to ditch LABs from the list, they've made the plugin spectacularly ugly and actually unusable in an effort to push their low value subscription offering. I've lost a lot of respect for them. I was just about to throw down my cold hard cash on SSO, but I'm now reconsidering...

Hi Kevin, First of all, I want to thank you for your great video and the information you shared. Regarding free orchestras, I'm very perplexed about all these nice orchestral libraries that, in my opinion, have great demos but are not suitable for their intended target of students or beginners who are just starting to compose for orchestras. The only exception is the BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover, but honestly, the sound quality is too poor with only one round-robin. Besides, almost all other libraries are just special combos or ensembles, which I find totally unusable for composing coherent orchestral pieces. By the way, this is nothing against your excellent dissemination work. I proposed to the SoundPaint guys that they create something to fill this market gap: a library similar to the BBC free orchestra but with decent sounds and 2-4 articulations per instrument (e.g., legato, long, short). This could be the "correct" approach, and while it may not be free, I think this library could cost less than $50 and still be a success. What do you think about it? BTW do you listened the free Sonuscore Orchestra Elements? Thanks, Giorgio
