Would love to see how to load some alternative GRIB files into Expedition! I tried exporting the SPIRE and UKMO from PredictWind Offshore (I have the subscription) and Expedition wouldn’t read them… Not sure if QTVLM is the same
@StarpathNav
@StarpathNav 4 күн бұрын
I am not sure what type or format of files are available from Predict Wind, but Expedition will show any of the files mentioned in this video, and indeed any standard grib format. Once you have the file with extension grb or grb2 then just copy that file to the Gribs folder in the Expedition data folder found under c:/program data/expedition. Then on the Wx data tab, click settings top left and you should see your file, and if not checked, add a check mark to it, and that will automatically show the file... but you must have the screen set up to cover the region of the data as i do not think it finds it for you. The same is pretty much true for qtVlm. If it is a valid grib, it will load and display.

I just ordered my second "Starfinder" off amazon. Their up to $92. these days. BUT STILL well worth having aboard ! And in certain areas of the World's Oceans, GPS isn't always reliable. Potentially "Enemies" of the U.S. are constantly monkeying around with ways to disrupt reception OR trying to jam/scramble the signals! Remember: those satellites are pretty far away. So the signal strength down here on the ground are pretty weak. We really still need LORAN as a reliable "backup" !!!!!

I've downloaded enc to my opencpn and qtVlm on Android and Linux, and I find a lack of land detail: elevation lines, roads, landmarks, terrain notes. For instance, if I zoom in on Lummi Island and the steep slopes around Baker Reservoir, and flip between raster and vector charts ( either by chart selection header bar buttons or en/dis abling chart folders in settings ) I'm aghast at the loss of land detail in enc mode. Am I missing some settings or is the land detail simply not there in enc? Thanks
@StarpathNav
@StarpathNav 19 күн бұрын
You are not missing anything... other than the terrestrial charting you note. This is not good at the moment in NOAA ENC, and they know that and they will fix it. In the end, the land coverage will be better in the ENC (and NCC) than it is in traditional paper charts. We show that can be true because in qtVlm you can right now add elevation contours with a spacing of your choice, and also add roads and buildings on your own. We have videos on the process. It is done via shape files. See davidburchnavigation.blogspot.com/2021/12/adding-elevation-contours-to-qtvlm.html which has a link to a video. For the moment, NOAA is busy with the rescheming project which is a major overall to the size, shape, and scales of all ENC. I think it is fair to think of that as having higher priority; then they will add the land features. See www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/publications/docs/enc-design-handbook.pdf As for chart notes, in qtVlm you can turn on "Highlight objects with extra information" and it will show which items you can click to read notes about. ENC include all the notes that were on the paper charts, they are just not so prominent.

There are free inland ENC (IENC) for all EU nations that cover all the rivers and some coastal waters near river basins, but otherwise all global nations except US and New Zealand charge for their ENC. There are packaged ENC options for specific nav apps (ECS) such as Meltemus charts for qtVlm or O-charts for OpenCPN and these are much discounted prices, but they only work on those specific apps.

It seems you need to find (unpack the app folder) and then duplicate the harmonics files to another location and then reassign to new location... or maybe i am missing something, Then the only snag i see is, it seems my Mac ver does not respond to the arrow size control, so i am left with very small arrows. I am still working on that. Just checked the PC version and it works great there! No snags. Thanks again. I should have checked the PC version first.

The great circle is the direction to the target, but beyond that i do not know the answer to your question.
@aklearns544
@aklearns544 4 ай бұрын
@@StarpathNav I guess I should rephrase my question. If one is taking the great circles initial heading will he reach the target without having to steer? The reason I’m asking is because in the example I provided , the great circle has an initial heading of NE. If you were to continue walking from that initial heading (now throw your compass away at this point) without steering, you would end up in Ireland if coming from Toronto. Even in perfect conditions(air traffic , wind etc) , planes have to steer right to go to a target that is south of the initial location.
@StarpathNav
@StarpathNav 4 ай бұрын
@@aklearns544 No. to follow a GC route requires constant heading changes to keep you "pointed toward the mark." On a RL course you get there without steering (ie constant heading), but only as you approach the destination at the end are you actually pointed toward the mark.

I am curious what you meant by “we’re assuming spherical earth“.
@StarpathNav
@StarpathNav 8 ай бұрын
Most or many books on cel nav or ocean sailing do a great circle computation using a spherical earth of a specific radius that leads to 1' of Lat = 1 nmi. ie it is assumed that the circumference of the earth is 360 x 60 mi and from c = 2 pi R you find that radius. But the earth is more an oblate spheroid, ie beach ball compressed down a bit at the poles. In this real earth the intersection of plane and earth through the center is not a circle in general. So that is the detail hinted at. I am working on a short video to illustrate this and explain a common compromise solution. Thanks for noting this.

gosh, you can not fix by buoy!! and in real situation you will NEVER get intersection of all 3 LOP, even the radar ranges. So it would be nice to add a solution for finding EP inside 3 arcs as there is for a triangle of bearing lines (intersection of medians of each angle)

David, the video is great. Thanks a lot. One question though: did you find any pattern on the accuracy differences (1.2 to 0.2) depending on the batches? Was it just a random series of watches and it just happened? In other words, is there a way to make sure you get a model from the "most accurate" batch? :)

Not relted to this subjets but can qtVlm interface with MNEA 2000? I've been told the boat's data needs to be converted to NMEA 0183 to read instrument and GPS location from the backbone.

qtVlm does not accept N2k directly, but all N2k systems offer a relatively inexpensive (~$180) gateway that converts the signals to NMEA0183. These can be via a USB cable or wireless.
