This could be described as a video of the Union Pacific lines during the final months of them heavily utilizing Pullman coaches (the painted coaches with either orange and black stripes on the window lines, or silver with a thick blue Metra stripe between the window lines).

@@dlcluley This was definitely a time when the Milwaukee District and Union Pacific lines were the trains with colorful passenger trains, as a lot of Milwaukee District North and West Line trains had at least one or two of the silver Pullman coaches on them, and North Central Service trains generally were built with four silver Pullmans behind the locomotive and then a Nippon Sharyo cab car.

@dlcluley
@dlcluley Ай бұрын
The original Addison station was built before Wrigley Field was there, so it was just a small neighborhood stop. Various changes were made over the years to deal with the large baseball crowds, but they finally just completely rebuilt the station in 1994.

Great memories!!! I see Racine was still open. Not surprised that Harvard and Wentworth were closed. When the Lake/Dan Ryan (Red line) opened in 1969, it siphoned riders from 63rd between Ashland and Wentworth. According to the CTA, they did not mean for this to happen. Great to see 58th before it was demolished...

The Drake line was abandoned in 1999 but some of the tracks still exist in 2024 like over the Ft Couch rd bridge to Bethel Church rd. Swear I saw a bottom red light on the tracks on Ft Couch Rd looking right before the GetGo. In RR terms this means stop. If anyone is still around to remember this area pls check it out!

I do think it’s strange that the cta kept the wires up from the North Shore Line… I wonder if it was more cost effective than installing third rail in 1964

If I remember correctly, the Skokie Swift started as sort of an experiment, so I suspect there was the absolute minimum spent to get started. Also, parts of the purple line in Evanston & Wilmette still used overhead wire into the '70s, so it wasn't unfamiliar technology.

@@dlcluley it was set up with the USDOT and the CTA to show off potential for other cities in the post highway era. I do find it surprising though that the infrastructure was maintained post-abandonment in 1963. Most of the interurbans vanished quickly

@@Nvideofilmsproductions The wires stayed in service for a while after I was there, but were removed sometime later in 2004. It was always 3rd rail from Evanston to around Crawford Ave in Skokie. In a couple of the shots you can see the pantographs raising at the switch over point. The CTA used the wire from Crawford to Dempster, and before 1963, when the North Shore Line ran, they used the overhead wires all the way to Milwaukee.
