I own two Toyota Hybrids, both XLE (2012 Camry, 2024 Corolla) and the luxury trims are my preference over the sport trims. While sport mode is nice, and this Camry has nice styling for the sport and especially the executive sport, I find that the comfort of the XLE outweighs the fun of the XSE for me. It’s been more practical. This Camry makes me very disappointed I couldn’t wait for it to launch. We got the Corolla late last year to replace a car that was having issues that decreased safety, which is not okay for my family but the repairs were far too much. I don’t regret fixing that issue, and now we have two Toyotas (I don’t miss my Chevrolet at all, regardless of how sporty and fun it was to drive!) so there’s no room to complain. That being said: owning a 2012 Camry and 2024 Corolla, the only things I prefer about the Corolla is the newer hybrid system and the suite of driver assistance features. (Corolla XLE premium package can adapt speed and take corners on its own - not “self-driving,” but great driver assists!) For everything else, I like the 2012 Camry more despite its age and dated interior. 190,000 miles and still going strong!

My inline 6 mild hybrid is averaging 28 mpg with non-gentle driving. Unless you’re doing a ton of short distance driving and using the EV functionality, not really a huge advantage getting the PHEV.

In 1967, while I was in the 😅😅Army stationed in Chicago, Ill I bought the first year 1967 Camaro. It was HELLO OFFICER MAROON, but no matter how many times I got pulled over, it was still a ball to drive. Wish I still had it. Today, I drive the 2021 canam ryker Rally, and it's also a great ride. I would bet the Polaris Slingshot would be a great ride also

My 72, Kawasaki H2, modified from 75 hp to 115 hp at Phx Kaw. was more fun than anything you've ever ridden! I'd dust that Camaro in less than a second and would only have to use 2 gears. My highly modified 73 Ford short bed 4X4 is also a hoot to drive, I'll never get rid of it, I've had it for 40 yrs. Thinking the Slingshot might be fun, even though it's not that fast. So many deer around here, bikes aren't that safe at 70 yo. Maybe I could survive a hit in the Slingshot, lol.

Both Ascent and Pilot have some major drive train issues affecting long term reliability. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure a 4 cylinder turbo charged engine designed for small light rally cars through a mushy CVT transmission designed for nothing larger than an Outback on a 4000lb plus Accent does not make sense long term. I am sure it is fine for 60K miles. The CVT transmission has LOTS of problems documented in the forums and dealer records. We are talking full replacements well under 30K miles on 2023/2024 models. The Pilot has a new twin overhead cam V6 and 10 speed transmission which are a new combination so nobody really knows. Honda had tons of problems with the prior 9 speed transmission including a class action lawsuit. The prior V6 single overhead cam engine with VTEC was rock solid but has been abandoned for the twin overhead to chase EPA stats not for performance or reliability. EPA is killing the car market.

Traded in my much loved 2023 CX9 carbon edition for the CX70 Turbo S Premium with the inline six. It doesn’t feel as nimble as the 9 but it’s an amazing car for the money. Since I drive very few city miles, I wanted the bigger engine and other than the clunky iStop system, this thing is great to drive. Got the polymetal grey with the red nappa leather and with the 70’s blacked out trim and new front and rear fascias , it looks amazing. The CX70 feels like a truly premium vehicle and it competes favorably with cars costing far more. Mazda may be a small car company but they punch well above their weight.

I did the same traded my 2016 cx9 for a poly Grey with red interior cx70 I think this is the best looking cx70 love it alot more technology than the cx9 only thing I miss is the tachometer on the head up display don't know why they eliminated it I do think the cx9 has a little more zip off the line but the cx70 catches up quickly

Excellent review. Two months ago I leased an Artisan Red CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus identical to the one you tested. I decided to lease: both because this is a first year model, and because of that sweet $7500 incentive on the front end! I absolutely love it, and also have experienced MPG-e numbers in the mid-50's! I can easily do my 12-mile round trip commute to work plus a stop at the grocery and dry cleaners on the way home on all-electric! It's great! While obviously not a deal-breaker for me, I did notice the initial jerky shifting. But so many reviews advised that the software update would solve that issue. Indeed, Mazda came through with a software update that has dramatically improved the real world driving experience. The transmission no longer seems to randomly hunt for gears at low speeds. More importantly for me, the steering is no longer overly heavy. Im a big guy and prefer an 'engaging' driving experience, but it was way too 'labored' initially: not the driving experience you'd expect in a 'premium' suv of this size. After the update, I noticed the difference instantly while pulling out of the dealer service area. Still plenty of Mazda-style road feel, but now it doesn't feel like a workout just to exit the parking lot. So...prospective buyers take note: with the software upgrade, the CX-90 driving experience is now essentially in line with that of the CX-70.

After some calculations with the cx 70s mile per kWh it costs about the same to drive as the turbo s. So the benefit is if youre in a lot of stop and go traffic you can just be in EV. Honestly the turbo s needs more power. the phev should not be as fast to 60 and the turbo s should be smoother than a 4cyl. Great review!
@kvetcha
@kvetcha Ай бұрын
I think the PHEV is faster off the line because of the large electric motor, but the I6 will be faster and smoother in overtaking and rolling acceleration. The mild hybrid noticeably launches worse than the PHEV because it has a much smaller electric motor that is responsible for the initial motion. Once the actual I6 kicks in it moves.

Great video guys! In europe we have the CX-60, that's had a multitude of problems, despite being the same architecture and hardware. Most noticeably the gearbox being very clunky and unpleasant to drive - how was the gearbox in the CX-70? It baffles me that the same hardware in more or less the same car can be so different, I assume it comes down to them not wanting to move the "newer" software from CX-70 to CX-60.

I have a CX-70 Turbo S Premium. The engine and transmission are silk. The engine does have a bark when you get into it, but still smooth. Love how the transmission works now too. I test drove a CX-90 Preferred last year and it was awful. Jerky weird transmission and the engine was less refined than the CX-5 Sig we had then. The CX-70 is much improved over the early CX-90s. And the early ones will be with updates.

Everyone needs to learn to appreciate the benefits of the modern CVT. Once they understand why it does for what, you will fully enjoy that weird banding sound and feel of it. Especially for hybrid, CVT is a must in order to give you both of excellent, buttery smooth ride and efficient power delivery when you push; all of these while getting the best fuel economy. It's some next level shit, and Toyota really refined it better than anybody else. If anyone has driven Toyota/Lexus hybrid, you actually won't complain about it.

This turbo or the NA 2.5 with the manual trans? I have the 2024 manual hatch and love it but have yet to drive the turbo but now I'm thinking I'll take one out for a test drive just to weigh the pros/cons and see what the extra power is all about. All things being equal I'd take a hatch over a sedan.
