The plugs and scoops could be 3D printed. Since you are now good at CAD, if you came up with a design for a part, many of your fans like me could print them for you. You could cover the part with a thin layer of glass and paint it for UV protection. Once the file is on the computer, a new part can be made again and again.

A great episode as always... your boat building skills and storytelling & editing skills are really superb. Top work by The Inspector too... good to see a job taken seriously, although a lack of a clipboard and shakes of the head combined with sighs and tutting makes me doubt their legitimacy...

Awesome work! Will it be an issue that you left the raw fiberglass exposed inside the box where there will be damp conditions? I'd assumed you'd need to paint that.

Oh, the hammer and pliers on the Inspector's vest are priceless! However, if such a high price is to be commanded, one would think the Inspector would not leave tools lying around the work area ... 😁

I wonder how a plumbers test plug would work for sealing the dorades. They’re pressure tested. Sized for pipe.

My last boat had plenty of dorades but as I’m sure you know nothing can touch a forehatch windscoop in the tropics when at anchor.

With the board and the thickness of fiberglass used on those boxes obviously you have no worries..is it stable enough to stand on and off of them w no fear of cracking or crushing etc?

Use a PVCs plug that you screw to tighten , not screw into the pipe and its under $10!

Seeing how much light came in, through the vent, before you put the box on. Might it be advantageous to make the area on the box, directly above the vent, more transparent? As always Massive Respect Leave, Same or Better, Everything Be Kind ☮️🙋🏻‍♂️

Typically you don’t need fans to pull air through the cowls (especially when they’ve got large gaping openings like on older boats). The air exchange in our Cheoy Lee was astonishing due to the huge stainless cowls (in combo with the hatches) pulling air through the interior - but I wonder if some solar powered fans pulling air through might not be a bad idea if the cowls you plan to use are smaller? I remember long hot nights in the sweltering v-birth of our old 33ft Ranger, dying for a whisp of air…even with the forward hatch cracked.

A 4" test plug should do the job nicely to seal up your cabin vent, and at around $9.00 at your local hardware store, it should be significantly cheaper than a marine specific hatch cover.

When I first started watching Duracell I had no idea of Matts skill set. But as I have been learning Matt has not only a great skill set as a builder but a good understanding through his experience as a sailor of what is needed to build a comfortable and safe cruising boat and the work ethic to see it through in a timely manner. I learn from every video. Thanks Matt and janni for making these videos for us.

I’ve often wondered how you were able to afford all the cat scans you were having done. It’s fortunate that you don’t have a Labrador Retriever - the lab reports would send you broke! (Apologies if that’s the millionth time you’ve heard that dad joke)

It's great you're considering making your own vent cowls. You'll have a chance to incorporate a bug screen, something I have to construct with difficulty on mine. The screen here (FL) has to be outside to keep wasps from making mud dauber nests inside the dorades. Fun things. A big Thanks to the Inspector for keeping you guys on your toes.

At this point I pledge to sign on as crew for passage around Cape Horn. You are going to do it, just a matter of time and I trust those scuppers because of the amount of glue and the initial precision in the through deck cut. I am sure both Shackleton and the Inspector approve.

I have thoughts about how fiberglass hinges could work on these doors and lids but it’s so hard to describe. There is a way to do it that produces zero sharp edges I know it.
