Great information I use scrapers when necessary so the swept back Irish grind would not be for me.I think the 45 deg grind would suit most of my needs.

I've finally started turning some of my elm blanks, and it seems to be one of the harder wood or timber as you call it. Did you notice it as well ? Maybe it's dulling my tools quicker and just seemed like it's harder. I heard you say that wood is wet, will it warp ? Sorry I hadn't finished watching the video whenever I asked about the warping. I'll email you some pictures of the elm live edge bowls I made, nothing as good as yours,but I'm just starting, learning from you, it's started out as a hobby but now it's becoming a passion

I have turned some spaulted elm and it had a perfect figure of a duck on the side, but it didn't seem hard like the regular dry elm timber

This elm that I have its hard but even worse as it has some minerals in it that dulls the tools faster.... You might have same case, just sharpen more and you'll be ok😉 I have seen pictures,good job on it

so good... I love making those, but my luck in the microwave has been 50/50... I get lots of cracks... going too hot or too long?
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Күн бұрын
Tony,I would say too long, try highest setting but for 30 sec and see if the bowl is steaming and if it really hot. If not, once the bowl little heat has cool down try 45sec or 1min. I rarely go over a 90sec , at that point bowl is really hot . And don't leave the shop (or kitchen😅) while doing this 👍

Beautiful pieces Tomislav. I see many areas where I need to hone my techniques, particularly with using the tip of the gouge as you did for the coves. It was also very instructive to see how you sand to avoid sanding away the crisp details. You answered my question before I asked it when you softened the edges of the piece.

Sorry but pure tong oil is very poisonous, made from the seeds, but just one seed is fatal, the oil is poisonous and not food safe at all, everything about the tree is poisonous, I have one in my yard. Look it up . Cheers 🎉

Any oil if you drink it is poison, once fully cured,tung oil is safe and used for ages for stuff like this.... I'm talking about pure Tung oil,not varnish mixed in..... Walnut ,linseed, hemp all of those can be poisonos ,but once cure they are inert....

Tomislav, do you know that true tongue oil is poisonous, I use it as a finish, but not on bowls, I guess it's possible that once it's cured it would be OK if no hot food was put into the bowl. I just wouldn't take a chance . Hopefully I helped you out, but if not please let me know why .
