Whats the difference between a German Shepherd and an Alsatian, is how you spell it. Most people think it is to do with their coat, a German Shepherd has long hair and an Alsatian has short hair. But it is because after the world wars, gsds became popular working dogs, but because of where they came from, and had the name german shepherd, people wanted nothing to do with them, so they were renamed Alsatian, or the Alsatian dog or shepherd dog, it wasn't until much later when things calmed down that they got their rightful name back of German Shepherd. Believe it or not but it was the white gsd that came first, because being a shepherd dog looking after flocks of sheep from predators such as wolves, they needed a dog that could blend in with the sheep, for a few reasons, one was so they could blend in and the sheep would accecpt them easier, two was if there was an attack by a wolf, due to the colour standing out by being white the farmer could tell his dog a distance away and wouldn't kill the wrong one. Some even bred with wolves. Making them stronger, smarter, and more independent, so the farmer could entrust them to do their jobs and think outside the box if necessary. Later the white gsd would be known as a throw back and not recognised due to its colour and would either be killed, dumped, or given away, or sold for a small price. The preferred colours of black and tan, black and gold, black and red, etc would become the standard. Any and all variations such as all white, all black etc were unacceptable. The breeder who then made the "standard gsd" even bred gray wolf in to the breed to get the desired look, shape and strength, but with trainability, once this was achieved after different breeds were added in here and there, and able to be repeated with a few base gsds, the breed was born. And von ? whatever he was call i forget, started breeding them to how he wanted them, "perfection" so he tinkered about a bit and created the standard gsd which was then recorded. And so has everyone else since then, between inbreeding etc going for a look, rather than practicality as a working dog, back yard breeders etc we have a lot of dogs with more problems than ever, and are so far from the original working shepherd dogs not only in looks but stamina and personality the breed has worse health problems now than they ever had. But this apparently is acceptable as long as they look good. We have failed this beautiful and noble breed, what was once a healthy hard working happy guardian of sheep, and a companion of shepherds. To an ill bred dog with joint problems and prone to illness and other desieses and skeletal problems. There are some good breeders out there, which stick to the original shepherd or as close to as possible, but after years of misbreeding it gets harder and harder to do. So here comes the next phase, breed a gsd with a mali, one similar in look and temperaments, but without the health issues, hoping to get the same looking breed, with similar hard working temperaments as the old gsd and none of the health problems. Until these become popular and testing for illnesses are forgotten about and you have a gsd mali who is bouncing off the walls because they aren't being worked or trained enough, and ending up in shelters. Breeders should stop thinking they can do better or improve on a breed without seriously thinking about it, all dogs should be tested for possible illness and all results recorded. Stop the breeding of unhealthy dogs.

Thank you for sharing this informative and insightful comment about the history and breeding of German Shepherds. It's unfortunate that overbreeding and prioritizing looks over health has led to health problems in the breed. It's important for breeders to prioritize the health and well-being of the dogs they breed, and to ensure that they are properly tested for illnesses. It's also important for people considering getting a German Shepherd to do their research and find a reputable breeder who prioritizes the health of their dogs.

@@petinsiders thank you. And your right, breeders should do testing on all dogs, and sign contracts which stipulates no breeding unless properly tested, and homes are waiting for the pups and keep in touch with the owners of their pups, if there are any problems they should take the dog back and give a lifetime guarantee to do so. But mali' s are the latest thing as they have been seen on tv and the police and forces use them, but most people can't handle them, just as they can't a well bred gsd as they are to hyper and always wanting to be on the go. Most people think a good walk, play a bit of ball and job done. They don't give them mental stimulation or a job to do, so the dogs chew on everything they can get their teeth in to, get snappy and unruly and a lot of people can't handle that. Yes they are great family pets as long as they are trained and excersised both physically and mentally. That's just the gsd, the mali is all of the above and more, as the gsd used to be. So now breeders are crossing the gsd and mali to try and get the best of both, the calmer personality of the gsd, and none of the medical problems of the mali. So the results have been varied, you have a gsd with personality of the mali bouncing off the walls, being sold as a pure bred gsd, and mall's with all the health problems of the gsd. Occasionally you get odd one or two out of a litter that looks like the gsd or mali with a calmer temperament of the gsd. But you don't know until they are older, and by then it's to late, and it's another dog dumped or pts through no fault of their own. Even some dog trainers have trouble with them, because they are unbalanced. One minute they are fine, working nicely, the next they are board and frustrated and biting someone. They are unpredictable and can be more dangerous than either breed. It's so sad, most end up in a shelter or worse being put down. All because humans are interfering and messing with genetics and playing god. Most with no real background or knowledge of either breed, or have had a calm shoreline had before and think it's easy and will make them a bit extra cash. It makes me mad and sad, for the dogs, they didn't ask for this, it's not their fault yet are persecuted when something goes wrong like a bite. Then are dumped in a shelter where they are in a kennel alone for probably 22 hours a day and they just go crazy and get aggressive, and as staff haven't got the staff, time or funds to sort that dog out it's put down, to make room for one that they might be able to save and rehome that's less stressed and easier to manage. You can't wipe the slate clean every time you make a mistake, only god (if there is one) can do that and has the right to do that. X

I had a pocket bully she was so human like. Big big personality so short and stocky, full of life very muscular turned up little snout. Beautiful dog. She had liver failure at 7 yrs old. She really got jipped on life. She was so full of life and fought till she cudnt fight no more. She wud never let me know she was in pain but i cud see it and when she stopped eating and drinking i knew her time w me had come to an end. I got a standard size puppy 3 days b4 i had to.put her down i thought it wud spunk her up and make her feel better instead it made her give up. She knew i wud have another dog to love and care for so now she cud go home to god and i wud be alright. It broke my heart. I know she was so sick my poor baby it was so hard to let her go but i cudnt be selfish and let her suffer. She crossed over to the Rainbow bridge 1 month and 3 weeks ago. I miss her so much. I know she is not in pain anymore she is all better. And i know she will wait for me and one day ill see her again thats what keeps me going. I love her so much. She was one of the most loyal loveable dogs i ever had the pleasure of owning. She went everywhere with me. I got her certified as my esa service dog u wud have thought she went to school and was a professional service dog. I had a brain injury in 2005 she knew exactly what to do if i lost my balance it was amazing. Unbelieveable, she was so smart. Everyone loved her and she loved everyone. Such a great dog great pesonality. I now have a standard bully puppy as i said she is not as docile as Lil Bear and she is way more energetic. Her snout is a little longer less snorking no snoring but does have a big personality. These dogs are one of the best breeds out there. I wud highly recomend these dogs to everyone who wants a loyal loving dog that will love u unconditionally and protect you even if it were to end their life. Best dog ever. I love you Lil Bear

I'm sorry for your loss of Lil Bear, it sounds like she was an amazing companion and service dog. It's never easy to say goodbye to a beloved pet, but it's clear that she was loved and cared for deeply. It's great to hear that you have a new furry friend to love and care for, and I hope that your new puppy brings you joy and comfort in the same way that Lil Bear did. Thank you for sharing your story and your love for this wonderful breed of dog.

This video seems to be a basic "how to" video of how to treat ANY dog you have. Now the training and socialization part may be a MORE NEEDED thing with ANY dog breed that is powerful enough to overpower their owner or handler when in public. The rest is kinda stuff that maybe a person who has never had any dog before will need to be told about. I kinda think the owners that end up NOT doing those simple common sense things simply don't give a damn to do them. My bff has rental properties, and had found a Pitt/Boxer mix in a rental with no food or water, and gas stove burners on full blast for heat. My family took him in, sadly he only lived about 8 months with us before getting cancer. He was sweet but had "issues" about people coming up to the fence he was in. If you came up to him on the other side of the fence, you'd swear he wants to kill you, but was sweet if you were in the fence or anywhere else than outside the fence. I guess he must have been teased by people outside of the fence he may have been in in his past life? We had the fluid in his chest drained many times so he could breathe okay, until it no longer worked. It was a type of cancer that Boxers get. I still miss him.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved Pitt/Boxer mix. It sounds like he was a sweet dog who unfortunately had some issues due to past experiences. It's heartbreaking to think about how some dogs are mistreated and neglected, but it's heartwarming to know that there are people like you and your family who are willing to take them in and give them the love and care they deserve. It's important to remember that training and socialization are crucial for all dogs, specially those who are powerful enough to potentially overpower their owner or handler in public. Thank you for sharing your story and for being a caring and responsible pet owner.

Most of the people in the Philippines are scared of American Bully. They also thought that they are pit bulls. Most of the parents pull their children away from us whenever we walk in the mall. It feels like we are monsters and they’re too scared of us.
@petinsiders
@petinsiders Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing this kind of reaction from people in the Philippines. It's important to remember that perceptions and attitudes towards certain dog breeds can vary from one culture to another, and may be influenced by past experiences or media portrayal. However, it's also important to educate others about the differences between American Bullies and Pit Bulls, and to demonstrate responsible dog ownership. This can help dispel some of the misconceptions and fears that people may have about these breeds. Remember to always keep your dog on a leash and under control in public places, and to be respectful of other people's space and comfort levels. With time and effort, you may be able to change some people's opinions and help create a more positive image of American Bullies in your community.
