How is the flow rate? I built a spray booth with a 4” inline fan in mind but the one I have just doesn’t work with the filter, it barely even pulls smoke from a match nearby it. Rather than dropping a hundred or more $$ on a higher cfm inline I’m considering rigging up some kinda pc fan array (I have a ton of them laying around the shop) and 3D printing an enclosure for them with a 4” connection. 🤔 great build btw! Loved the video

Well, let's just say, "it sucks". Ha. I haven't tried the match test yet but when I did use it I could not smell any paint at all.the pc fans move a lot of air. Heck you said you have some. Rig one up and see of it helps.

@@RoadsAndRailsHobbies it’s one of those instances of should I use precious hobby time to fiddle with it or just breakdown and buy the inline fan that I know will work with it haha 😅 the cheapskate in me says to tinker and save the money but the hobbyist in me wants the time for actually working on hobby stuff for once lol such is the struggle of adulting 😂

I just started airburshing and have been using water to thin out the paint and it has not been going very well. I pretty much given up but after watching this and seeing you use alcohol to thin it out, that didn't even cross my mind. So I'm going to try again
@RoadsAndRailsHobbies
@RoadsAndRailsHobbies 16 күн бұрын
That's awesome to hear that you are going to continue airbrushing. Alcohol is a decent way to thin craft paints, but it dries super fast. If you want another good way to thin them that gives you a lot more working time and is much more forging, then check out my video on thinning craft paints with windshield washer fluid. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care.

I agree with you. The no name companies have gotten really good. Honestly airbrush tech has not changed for 30 years and the design is all the same so it is no surprise that no name companies have mastered the tech in a short time.

@RoadsAndRailsHobbies
@RoadsAndRailsHobbies 20 күн бұрын
Well that sucks!!! Ok, so the first thing that I would do is to remove the handle, losses up the chucking nut for the needle, pull the needle back a little bit to make sure it moves freely then press the needle all the way foreword until it is seated properly amd then make sure the chucking nut is tightened down. Then move the trigger back and forth to make sure the needle is moving. If it is. I would just put some water in the paint cup and see of it will come out. If the water sprays out without any issues, try your paint again. If the paint still won't sray then most likely the paint has not been thinned down enough or depending on what paint you are using you may be getting clogged up by something in the paint. I don't know your experience level with an airbrush so forgive me if you have already tried this. Let me know of it works or not.

Ah, I forgot this video was about craft paints, there's a solid 15mins of talking about airbrushes, brands, upkeep, etc. I should have paid attention to the chapter labels. I worked with a heavy body white out of a tube the other day, used my homemade thinner to work it down a bit, just manually mixing it, but then I poured that into a dropper bottle with some ball bearings and let the vortex mixer finish smoothing it out. It worked pretty well!

Thanks for posting! I’ve been building models over 40 years now and I have to admit, I’m starting to drift in the direction of giving these cheap craft paints a try, especially since I’m getting burned out paying an arm and leg for model paints! I was in a local Hobbytown USA recently and some paints they have go for 6 to 9 dollars for a puny bottle! 😳 That is absurd. Aside from that these model companies had better get their heads out of their 🫏-es. For years, I have contacted them suggesting ideas for new kits only to never hear nothing in return. My fix for that? I’ve been recently looking at resin 3-D printers...if they don’t want to help and only want to charge a premium for their models, then I will start to make my own! I’ve also suggested ideas for resin upgrades, never got a response either and I can make those to. My apologies for soapboxing but it’s high time these model companies were called out for their shenanigans. Sooner or later they’re going to price themselves right out of business.

It's all good. I love to hear people's thoughts on our hobbies. I 3d print a lot of stuff myself. As far as paints go. The cheap acrylics are awesome to use, but I personally will not use then to paint models with that I want to have a smooth finished paint job, like on a model car. If you are painting terrain or weathered models like military then they are great for that. For my model card I use Createx brand airbrush paints. They are fantastic. You can pick up a 2 ounce bottle from Places like Hobby Lobby for around 9 bucks. And trust me these paints go a long way. You can find them on Amazon as well. Check out the Createx website to see the different paints they have to offer. They even have candy's. Which I'm getting into heavily right now. Take care and thanks for watching and commenting.

I recently bought a airbrush kit, 3 airbrushes and a compressor. Nice kit but, in the directions they strongly recommend using distilled water when cleaning and reducing the paint. Why is that and should I only use distilled water?
@RoadsAndRailsHobbies
@RoadsAndRailsHobbies 26 күн бұрын
I don't know why they would say to only use Distilled water. Using water to thin acrylic paints is fine, but if you want to use enamels like good old testors enamel model paint then you cannot use water to thin them. I want to say that if it a normally built airbrush then you can spray whatever you want through it. However without actually having it in my hands to inspect it and read the instructions I cannot in order to protect myself give you a 100% thumbs up to use whatever thinner you want.

Hi Paul - could you perhaps do a video on cleaning the airbrush (i.e. taking it apart).... I watched your vid and decided to buy the kit but this airbrush does NOT come apart the same way as usual ones - the secondary trigger isn't directly removable!! so I managed to get the thing apart and then couldn't put it back together again! (spoiler alert: you have to kind of screw it back together) and apologies - I only noticed your affiliate link now - my bad...

I'm starting airbrushing and watched dozens of beginner and advanced videos, most on much bigger channels. There were many good videos, few bad ones, but this video was by far the best. There was no other video that could show all the important basics in just 45 minutes and i did not find anything wrong about your techniques. I still learned some new things, e.g. noone i watched explained, that you measure working pressure, while the trigger is pushed (even though it feels absolutely logical, after you showed it).

I know this is an old video, but i still hope someone can answer my (noob) question. I live in the Netherlands and i found that artists are using gesso primer for their canvas. After looking online i found someone who used the gesso primer also with a brush on warhammer models. Here they have "Van Bleiswijck gesso primer" and it is very cheap compared to e.g. vallejo primer. But i am not sure if it would be possible to use a thinned version of this gesso primer on model cars and airplanes.
