Damn it! This is the second video of a Catalina I've seen in the last couple of hours that's an amphibious variant, instead of a flying boat variant.

That's a great video Ken, I did write an article about the Abandoned Catalina in Saudi Arabia, If anyone is interested : www.aviationsurf.me/2020/11/the-abandoned-consolidated-pby-catalina.html

Thank you for favourable comment about my video. I notice that you reference the Artificial Owl for your story. You may like to know that it is almost word for word the account of the Thomas Kendall's story taken from my original website uk.geocities.com , now moved to kendo1938.bravesites.com/catalina-pby-n5593v. The photos you have included in the story are also mine. There is an obscure but inadequate link to my photostream at the end of the Artificial Owl piece. You can view all my Catalina photographs on Flickr at www.flickr.com/gp/kendo1938/22s25e. If you read my original story you will find additional links that flesh out further the story of flight, including a link to the original Life magazine article.

The plane is much worse off now. Tail section gone and moved some 20m further, wing collapsed, only a shadow of even the state in the video

This aircraft is now (2020) broken apart and covered in graffiti. It has deteriorated more in the past 8 years (2012 to 2020) than it did in its first 50 years. Internet fame has not been good for this wrecked aircraft. Look at the Google Maps 360 views of this aircraft at Seham Bay to see for yourself.

I was just about to post a similar report. Damn shame it's gotten far worse. I wonder how it got torn apart like that. Some local vandals had fun with their pickup trucks, or what?

Sad to see this old warhorse abandoned like this. From the footage it looks like it has been well stripped by thieves ( NOT souvenir hunters, thieves) and also I bet it has deteriorated much more since the vid was done. Sadly probably too far gone for restoration now.

After the war, PBY5 Catalina's had a brief second life as "flying yachts" in the '50's. About a dozen were converted for private use by an entrepreneur. This plane was one of those. The family owners were touring the world when forced to abandon it under fire. I'd love to see a modernized replica of the original airframe built (with 21st century tech of course). All new avionics, aluminum & carbon fiber hull, basically take all of the ocean yacht racing tech of recent decades and re-do this handsome plane. Totally modernized in every way. I bet there'd be a nostalgia buyer or two, kind of the ultimate toy for the multi-millionaire who's got it all. Why not?
@handleismyhandle7 жыл бұрын
NEVER combine aluminum and carbon fiber, or you will end up with carbon and dust. Damp charcoal on aluminum foil can eat a hole right through in a day or two.
@handleismyhandle7 жыл бұрын
It's a good combination for making a simple battery, but not for anything structural.

+Old glory Last time that happened, the incompetence got the airplane burned to the ground (another, of course, not this one, but by far, a greater piece of history). So better off rotting to the ground than that. Aka Kee-bird and the incompetent, greedy, down right murderous Darryl Greenamyer.
