A similar situation happened in my family. My 5x great grandfather was born to a mulatto slave woman, his father being the master of a plantation in Virginia. He was sent away to his father's sister's family as an adolescent to live with them and be educated, raised as white. Upon his father's death, he was willed the farm which he sold and then moved to Kentucky. Throughout his life, he married three times, all of his wives were white.
