This is why companies want to get people on a freelance basis, because having employees is bloody expensive!

Why did you recommend to not work more than 30 hours per week?
@Snerdles
@Snerdles 9 күн бұрын
Just a quick maths FYI. 100 dollars a week is not 400 a month, it's more like 433 a month. So the weekly/monthly scam manipulation is even worse than described here.

If you are a successful PT then this is a terrible/insulting deal. If you are a brand-new PT with no client base then its not that bad. Sure, you're working for free, but any PT knows that you spend a lot of your time walking the gym floor for free anyway. Those 12 hours per week are an opportunity for you to meet new clients and book in sessions. It also massively lowers the risk of you getting into debt. My first few months as a PT were terrifying, as my rent was £1,020 per month and I was competing against 13 other PTs for clients. Having a £150 per month rent and spending 12 hours per week in the gym would have been a good option for me during those first few months. I was easily spending 8 hours per day there anyway. After I had been training for a couple of years, I actually had this opportunity, and I turned it down, as I was established, and it was no longer worthwhile. James Smith strikes me as a very good PT, and I imagine that he could walk into a brand-new gym and have a full roster of clients within a couple of weeks. But most PTs suck at building a client base and it can take them months to hit 20-30 hours per week. Taking offers like this can make sense. The real issue here is that gym rents have been an embarrassing rip-off for far too long. £750 per month is an absolute joke, and makes the business way too difficult for new trainers. According to Exercise.com 80% of PTs fail in their first year, and I'd say that excessive gym rents are the number one cause.

I don’t understand this trend with petrol guzzling expensive cars that require you to speed in built up areas and put people’s lives at risk in a 30mph zone, it’s dickhead behaviour plain and simple.

Fantastic advice and I definitely want to be off shift as soon as possible but as a new PT at a Pure Gym who is only six months in, I would need about 3k a month to cover all my expenses if I was to go straight away on rent. How the hell did you manage to make this work so easily in the beginning? Thanks a lot for the video as always!

I wrote my masters dissertation on bogus self employment. Im amazed no one has challenged the set up. More so after uber v aslam. The whole things a con. I see it time and time again in my gym. Theyre sold a dream and rapidly realise its not happening and leave.

I was in puregym for 6 years. No rent but worked for them 15 (dropped to 2012 in 2017) hours a week for the privilege. We are all self employed so all the holiday/sick days etc are on you not the gym.

One of the biggest perks of being self-employed is claiming tax deductions for "business expenses". Everything from your sunglasses (protective eye-ware) to your travel (business trip) becomes tax deductible.

Trouble is, most people don't have over £700 per month to give to a gym while they are trying to build up a client base - which could take months. So, you kind of have to start off by working for them for free. I wouldn't want to work for them and pay them as well, though. Even £150 per month is a lot to be giving them when you don't have clients. Also, why are you multiplying and dividing by 4 to convert weeks to months? A calendar month is not 4 weeks (except February in a non-leap year). I've recently passed the level 2 Instructor course, so am ideally looking for an Instructor position for now. I start the PT course in September. Many gyms don't want to employ Instructors, though.

This makes no sense. If I want to buy something whose brand I don't recognize, I try to find and check their website. If they don't have a proper website, I don't buy it. I just don't understand how a business can not have a website. If they can't provide this simple and basic thing, how can I trust them to put their best effort into their product or service?

The minimum wage shit is a bit irrelevant, the labour you'd be doing is literally a minimum wage standard of work - cleaning shit, restacking weights ect. As a way to get into being a PT, it's fine. If you can cover the extra cost of rent through your PT work then obviously go for the no labour option. It's always good to have options.

buy your own shit, its allllll assets. this is very good info tho james, you're a decent guy. just to clarify tho, you earn 54.6, take home 42.2 and the gov get 12.3. The 9k you pay isnt deducted from the 12.3 tho is it? you dont then have to just pay the government 3.3? its only going to be tax deductible like that as a ltd business which after you pay a salary which then would get taxed based on earnings/dividends plus NI contributions? I need to figure taxation out more, am i getting self employed and ltd mixed up a bit here? thanks for the video tho, some good info to think on

Hello James, thank you so much for the amazing, helpful and free content. This channel is going to help so many people! My first client offered to pay me 100€/h, as that is what he paid his former PT, so of course I said yes. I am currently at two clients, but struggling to find more clients. I assume that it is in part because of the high hourly rate. ( But it wouldn't have made sense to say no to an offer like that, right?) Question 1: Should I lower my hourly rates? Question 2: Should the hourly rate be the same for all clients? (As if they should, then I would have to lower my rates for the existing clients as well) Thanks a lot for your advice in advance, can't wait to hear what you think!
