Thanks for posting this fascinating and informative episode. The interviews with Feldman and the actor (whose name somehow got cut off!) were especially interesting, though there's so much more to it than those.

"No help from the British government"...three of the best films of the silfent era were made by the youngest son of Asquith,, and Elvey's best silent film, The Life Story of David Lloyd George, rediscovered after this documentary was made, was made with LG's involvement.

British film in the silent era? There's Hitchcock, Grierson and, er...that's pretty much it.

Anthony "Puffin" Asquith's silent films surpass Hitchcock's IMHO.

You can see something else in Greta Garbo's first starring screen appearance, besides her prodigious talent: the cameraman clearly knew how to LIGHT her to the best effect, even outdoors and in low ambient light. It's an effect which American cinematographer William Daniels would use to huge advantage in Garbo's Hollywood films.

The documentary magic of Kevin Brownlow and David Gill, who also gave us the equally fabulous ‘Hollywood’ series! Terrific narration by Kenneth Branagh and music score by Carl Davis, who also created the amazing score to ‘Hollywood’!

I was honored, and honored is the only word, to see "Napoleon" in the late 70's at the Chicago Theater with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a nice little outfit, doing the music. I will just leave it to your imagination what that experience was like.

I know this has nothing to do with the history of cinema, but I was taken aback by the narrator's assertion "even the Kaiser, who worshiped militarism" [36:54] My question is this: HOW (exactly) did the Kaiser "worship militarism" any more than George V, or for that matter ANY reigning monarch at that time. They ALL loved to parade around in their best uniforms, and each and all loved to parade their latest military hardware as well. It was a way of assuring the people that they would be safe under the protection of their particular monarch. The Kaiser was no more guilty of this than any of the rest of them.
@devindevon6 жыл бұрын
So if they all worshiped militarism, as you state, it follows that the Kaiser worshiped militarism. You seem to agree with the narrators assertion. Now all is right with the world... hooray!

Wilhelm II. was brought up in a way to alienate him from his parents on purpose. Crippled during his birth (the left arm was dislocated due to forced 'evagination') he should never have to be named 'crown prince' in the first place - a prussian ruler had to be 'wehrfähig' (physically fit for warfare). Since his father, Friedrich (III.) was supposed to be the next Kaiser, Wilhelm was allowed to experience the privileged curriculum of a prussian officer, thus he was actively placed among the most distinguished units in a manner, that shielded him from reality. I say: Wilhelm II. DID worship militarism any more than anyone, because he held himself in highest regard in every aspect of everything. Chemists had to endure long lectures about chemistry by him during audiences, so did theologians, chimney-sweepers, cooks and assassins.It took until 2016 to see a head of state emerge to put Wilhelm on second place in that manner.

Aggelos Zorbas To get around the copyright problems - as it is not being shown in its 'original' form the rights holders can't ask for it to be taken down., actually the second episode is blocked, I assume because it i hasn't been altered.
