Back in high school, 2003, discovering X Japan was a life defining moment. I was a huge metalhead at the time (still am 2 decades later!). In Australia absolutely nobody had any idea this band even existed. We had a student come from Hong Kong to study at our school - he played the drums, I played guitar, we both loved metal so we got along instantly. One day he turns up to school with a bunch of X Japan CDs, we go to the music room and listen to as much of it as can - I can still remember being COMPLETELY blown away. Copied all the CDs and trawled the net for live concert footage (this was the tail end of napster, beginning of kazaa/limewire era). To this day, I've never found a band that captures lightning in a bottle the way X Japan managed to. One cool experience: our friends got on board and we put together a band with them on bass/vocals and rhythm guitar, our new friend from Hong Kong on drums and myself on lead guitar. We'd play a lot of the usual metal you do (Call of Ktulu by Metallica was our warhorse), do some blues/metal jams, and then learned a few X Japan songs by ear. Our school had a sister school in Japan. Every year there would be a delegation sent one way or the other, so some students and teachers would visit the other school. This year was their turn to visit us, so our little posse played 'Weekend' for them at the welcome ceremony our school held. They went crazy! Such a wild experience I'll never forget.
