I'm very late to this party but I want to say how much I've enjoyed this presentation as well as the one you did on The Waves.

Thomas Bernhard can't be translated, even less so by an "American".

Before the woman said it at 52:00, I was (mentally) screaming, "Projection!" I've had a Percival myself, and his name was actually Toby, a coincidence not lost on me at age 21, when I was already two years in the thrall of this book.

The picture on the title page of the video is of Vanessa Bell (Woolf’s artist sister). It is not Virginia Woolf.

I just spent the weekend in Hudson NY. It's a very eclectic small town much like the one I grew up in Northern Berkshire Mass. I live in bustling Monmouth County NJ now and miss the small town feel. I just watched Two Square Miles and enjoyed it tremendously. I highly recommend watching it to see how small towns in America deal with change and the status quo. Thank you for making the effort to put the movie together. I hope your town thrives and continues to heal from the wounds of the past. I can see the changes from the time of Two Square Miles movie and hope you can do better for the whole community in the shadow of Covid. The housing prices have skyrocketed and most stores were for the higher economic market. I hope that can change. Keep working at making it a community that is for Everyone!!

Great discussion. I read it quickly the first time which was like reading an epic poem. Then I read it slowly and in understanding the words it became melancholy throughout.

Thank you for this. I am finding that it helps to read slowly and aloud. It helps for me to actually hear it. It never ceases to amaze me. The beauty of the prose brings tears to my eyes.

January 6 was an epic and proud moment where millions of people who for decades have been spit on and ignored got in the faces of those DC rats and made them flee scared through the tunnels- even if just temporarily. It was a day that shocked and sent fear through the entire security state apparatus. The American people were still there. January 6 was an amazing day. Never have seen something so patriotic. You have half the country which thinks our elections are illegitimate. Maybe do a case study on that? January 6 was the day patriots rose up against a Congress that ignored them and didn’t even glance at flagrant election law violations.

I read TO THE LIGHTHOUSE last week. My introduction to her. I was not expecting a book so dramatic. If you will, I did not expect to feel a stake in the outcome of the story.

Woolf would love this reply. I'm a retired lit prof and have read and reread her novels, stories, essays, diaries, letters, and thus feel confident in offering a big yahoo on her behalf. You've identified precisely the real feat of "To the Lighthouse": Woolf's ability to turn the novel inside out, transferring drama from the exterior plotline to the interior life of her characters. And you read with exactly the kind of "sympathy" that Mrs. Ramsay so admires: you felt a stake in others' feelings.
