"Lock picking lawyer" can open anything, but that takes the right tools, skills, and time to delicately work it. So that brings me back to what NBP said here. It comes down to defending against more likely attacks, which are probably "brute force."

I've been using the Abus 20/70 on my storage unit and what I like is that with it's keyway cover on it looks pretty much just like every other discus lock out there, so it looks like nothing special is in my unit. I had an Abloy PL330 on there, but in addition to being an open 8mm shackle it's so nice looking and so high security compared to what's on neighbors units it makes it look like there's cool stuff my unit. Security through obscurity I think someone called it. So a big part of a padlock is where it is and what it "says", the 20/70 says "I'm just a disc lock" but it's really a disc detainer that tensions off a random disc so even "the pick Bosnian bill and I made" won't actually work if you do go in for the pick, meanwhile a big shiny Abus Rock says "I don't care if you have a ramset gun, I have money and probably spent some of it on cameras too". Security will always partly be about theatre.

He states how to change the numbers ? But as a 4 digit code does not have to be in a specific order like 1234, it means that the number of options for a 4 digit is hugely less than if it had to be sequential. You can type 4321 2341 1342 etc and it will open. Seems quite weak to me. Both the rotary and the push button versions seem to have easily exploitable flaws that any incompetent could learn with ease.

I had to drill an Discus lock and it was very easy and made almost no noise. I would never buy one again.
@Nothingbutpadlocks
@Nothingbutpadlocks Жыл бұрын
It largely depends what you drilled. If it was a genuine Abus then drilling the keyway would not release the shackle. The Abus also contain a hardened plate under the outer stainless body.

They don't have bolt cutters out there? Cause that's by far the most common attack out here. That or a hammer.

If the only thing you do is padlocks why wouldn't you talk about how you can just drill them out Through the keyway. Or why/how drilling is protected against.

Maybe the diferent kind of thieves use different ways . They don't use several different ways but use only one for each lock . A bike thief might more commonly use bolt cutters and a container thief might use another way to get through . Depending on how hard you make it for them and how much you spend . Niece's place padlock was cut with bolt cutters . Now bought her a disc lock that is a low priced but added nuts to shackle to protect it even more . Her door and the latch doesn't look verry tough at all .. though . Next way might be cordless grinding wheel cutters . if I was a thief and wanted to spend more that's what I would use . They go through a lot of things .

Not almost unpickable. They are totally pickable. The lock is still very recommendable because it takes an experienced hand to open one of these with a pick and they are physically very resistant to attacks.

You could get a narrower long bar in of course but still very unlikely to break the Abus 90mm solid discus. Much more likely to break is a hasp it's locked to. Lock is only part of the equation.

We have a 220 which was bought for a wine rack, it just looks the part and a new type lock just didn't look the part. She keeps it under lock and key to stop me hitting the Shiraz so she keeps the key. What I really love about them is they are not clinical and just functional. I really get a buzz watching as she lock it. First the shackle is put through and closed, secondly the key is inserted and turned and that magical click She then removes the key closes the cover and tugs the lock to.ensure the lock has obeyed her wishes. Pity it's not rusty, they always look so good rusted up a bit. Back in the60s the park had an air raid shelter, the rusty metal door was,padlocked with a big rusty lock. I used to hold the lock and pull on it wishing it would open but was glad it stayed locked. I wondered when was the door last locked and where the key was. I always wanted to look inside. I thought perhaps it was padlocked in 1945 and the key had never been in the keyhole since. Could write a good story on it
