How wonderful to see the Adak I remember! I was there as a Naval Officer's wife for 18 months from the Fall of 1965 to the Spring of 1967. My daughter was born there and baptized at the Chapel. So good to see the totem pole. Upper Amulet. and Mt Moffet. We took many pictures of Mt Moffet also on those days when we could see it ! I had dinner aboard the Balsam with my husband! He was in charge of the port. There was no horseback riding though. I enjoyed my time there even without all the amenities that came later. It is the most unique experience of my life. I think there were only about 1,000 people in 1966 there .I have our pictures of Adak posted on Michael Gordon's Adak website.

Thanks for the great photos! I was stationed at Adak for 1 year in May 1973. I was with a small group of Seabees who lived in the Bering Hill barracks. Most of us worked at the Public Works Center. I enjoyed the hiking on the island.

I wish I had taken pictures when I was there '85-'87. I was a HM2 with VP-4. I married my wife, a YN1, at Bering Chapel. We spent our honeymoon in one of the MWR Quonset cabins near Finger Bay. My wife and I watched your slides and it brought back a lot of memories. Thank you!

My dad was stationed on Adak 76 to 80. He worked in the security dept. as a K-9 handler. Of all the duty stations this was his and our families favorite hands down. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the pictures. I lived in Adak from 1979-81 while working for a civilian defense contractor there. I was really into photography at the time, so took a lot of photos while there. Unfortunately, they've all been lost over the years, so this brings back many memories of those days.

Spent a year and a day there 1965 was in public works, had a side job as a lifeguard at the pool. One day l hiked/climes to the top of Mt. Moffet great views of Kanga volcano and the Bearing Sea. Interesting seeing the Adak National Forest looked like the trees are thriving although only a few feet taller in 73 virus’s 65 when I left.

The Roberts Housing Area photo at about 6:39 is reversed based upon the location of the Red, White & Blue sheds in the background. The New Roberts housing area should be to the right instead of the left in the picture.

Served Oct 71 to Mar 73. Worked in the search and rescue office in the Operations Building. What a lonely forsaken place. Adak makes or breaks you. Not a day goes by that I don't reflect back after 50 years.

I lived in Adak with my sister and brother and parents from 1954-58. These photos are a stark reminder. My dad was a contract dock worker. He never talked about it much after we returned to the states and settled in Seattle. My parents are originally from North Dakota and really did not enjoy Adak. Just being honest.

I lived at the Seismological Observatory directly across from the high school from July 1868 to July 1971. The only place that the Captain or anyone else had absolutely no control over. My father was Leonard E. Kerry and was the Chief of the Observatory. Adak was fascinating and not necessarily a fun place for a civilian high school teenage girl. I can say that I learned to swear even better than my brother who retired from the Navy as a Master Chief. lol just for ur information, Adak shut down mainly due to lead in the drinking water. They should've kept the base open for obvious reasons as well as part of the Tsunami Warning System. Last I checked there was less than 500 people still there. Would love to talk to u about Adak. Kathy from placitas new mexico.

Thanks for the pictures. Since I was up there April 73, to May 74. These pictures are "current" to us, and many others here. I read all the comments, and the flood gate of memories just opened up, with a big smile! Hunting Caribou and Ptarmigan, fishing Dolly Verden Trout, Hiking some, taking pictures, (sadly about 12 large reels of slides went missing) , watching the Otters play for hours, worked part time briefly at the crab plant and drank a LOT of beer!! You may have seen my car while there. AMBDU, (Adak Mobile Beer Drinking Unit), was stenciled on all four fenders, and on the doors was stenciled, Professor Olswag's Traveling Snake Bite Remedy Show and Truck Repair Service A white 1953 Ford Sedan, faded red lettering 99 days left on the Rock, meant you were "Short" 9 days left, 1 digit midget and when the "NEXT" jacket was handed to you, it was like hitting the lottery!!! But when you took it off and handed it to the "NEXT" guy, walked out the door labeled "Gate 2", got on the plane and sat down, the feeling of leaving something behind was overwhelming. Yup, is dark (all but those 7 days), windy, cold, wet...... and I never did find that Eskimo girl that was Promised to be behind every tree. Looking back, I wouldn't trade that year for anything. Thanks again for the pic's...... Mark T, AMS3 Ground Support Shop. AIMD, under Chief Hamm

I was there in 68 and 69, at the receiver site by Clam Lagoon. At the base of Mt Adagdak. I LOVED THE SEA OTTERS, THE EAGLES, AND THE UGLY OLD ROTTEN SALMAN. I almost got blown into Clam Lagoon once, but they had just put up a chain link fence for just that reason. I was a radio man RM2. I got so lonely I ran back home and got married to someone I didn't deserve, and we've been together for 50 years now. BEST THING I EVER DID. I LOVED THE PICTURES, THANK YOU!

Thank you for these photos. My father was stationed there a few years after this (Ernie Shumway) and I remember him speaking about Adak a lot. He was in the navy and I think he mentioned working in a bowling alley there? I remember he’d talk about that funny national Forrest sign “you are now entering (& leaving) Adak national Forrest 😂

Thom Webb 1972-1973 i WAS stationed at Adak Communications base for about 9 months and worked in the PN/YN office up on the hill. This was my first duty station from Boot Camp in Orlando. Wonderful memories as I had a great leadership up on the hill with Master Chief and Ed Caudell. Not much to do at that time but would love to go back now. LOL. Left Adak and eventually went to OCS in Rhode Island Line Officer. However, loved being a PNSN while at Adak. Finally retired after 20 in June 1992. All was great memories.

Thanks for the slide show. Was stationed on Adak 1970. I was a helicopter mechanic and Search & Rescue crewman on the Kaman helicopters we used at that time. I was able to fly not only around Adak but we occasionally flew to neighboring islands or around Great Sitkin. I found some fine Japanese fish net floats on the other islands. We put out Survival Barrels around the island that year. Transported them by helicopter. Also, had good hunting for caribou, ptarmigan and sea ducks. I hiked to the other side of the island and stayed in a WWII Quonset hut on the caribou hut.Great memories and a good chapter of my life. Glenn Larsen

Was a little shocked to see 16 year old ME in this video 45 years ago! Chief BA Simonson is my dad. Lived there from 71' to 75' and took a picture with Zeke as my graduation picture for the year book. Kid, Willie & Tex were all my friends. I loved the stables, the horses, and giving trail rides with my best friend Melody. As a kid, my brothers and friends would explore and hike in the cold wet freezing weather. Loved seeing the eagles. The Russian boat. We traded with them. I got perfume & my sister got a white round porcupine fish. My dad baptized a few sailors in the Bering sea which made the Paul Harvey how. He sure did turn blue! The pictures are great! So sad to see the state of the island now.
