Sarah's singing has always been top notch. Her rendition here was obviously guided by the tempo adopted by Sir Colin Davis. Sarah has through hell in recent years with cancer treatment, chemo therapy etc and family tragedy. She lived in my home town for years, but has now moved away. She is world famous and rightly deserves her international reputation.

Have a soft spot for this song as I sang this as a teenager .

There are dozens of unfortunate recordings of this movement - so difficult to pull off. This one is like a miracle. Nothing like it exists. Not close.

I defy you, though, after two or three hearings, to remain genuinely unmoved by this woman pouring out her heart and soul, as did Sir Edward, in this his "best of me", in the service of Newman's poetic, entirely compassionate and humanly realized theology, where Purgatory is characterized not as fire, but a cleansing lake, reminiscent of Dante's Euonoe.

Never, NEVER, have I heard this sung in a way that touched me so deeply.

Handel re- wrote this aria to suit the voice of the Mezzo-soprano castrato Guadagni. (According to editorial note in Watkins Shaw version of Messiah). That does rather strongly suggest a Mezzo Soprano range is right for this. I don’t think this is one of Sarah’s best recordings but that does not mean she has the wrong type of voice for this aria.

I had no idea she could do this! First time I've heard her in French rep. I encountered a mention of this and looked for it. So glad I did. It is exquisite! One of the most involved and convincing performances of this work I've ever heard....and I've heard many, as it's one of my favorites. Thanks for posting, and extra thanks for posting the text so we can follow as she sings.
