THE MIGHTY WARSHIP - BECAME A MIGHTY HEADACHE ! The life expectancy of the "Warships" was "cut short" (1959-72) because of the fact all of these locos began suffering increasing failures within 5 years of introduction. BR Western Region complained to the German designers, who came to examine failures. They found the fundamental problem quickly. Which was that these "Warships" were rostered for 21 hours per day availability (in line with other British Diesel types). This horrified the German designers, as the German V200 counterpart was like most German Hydraulics was rostered for daily circuits of no more than 15 hours. For the simple reason the German Government didn't cash starve Deutsch Bundesbahn, and simply agreed to pay for the quantity required by DB. In Britain if BR screamed for 100 locos, they would be lucky if the Treasury would pay for more than 80. Creating in BR's mind a necessity to squeeze the absolute maximum availability possible out of every type. NOTE: BR Diesel locos were expected to have a 30 year life span. But the problems of the "Warship" meant the first withdrawals occurred in 1968, in the SAME year the last steam locos were withdrawn ! So many diesel designs in the early diesel era that did not "shape up", (like the Baby Deltics) were rapidly withdrawn for their "Financial inefficiency" i.e. too many faults per hour of the actual diesel engine within the locos operation !

To me this was never Northern soul. soul/crossover/funk yes but never Northern. I hated going to Northern venues when it was half and half, ok if they had separate rooms. But they should never have mixed it with Northern Soul.

The true Smallwood Brothers are biological brothers: Johnnie, Joe, Solomon, and Phil on guitar. From Baltimore, Md. Wish you had an actual picture of the true brothers from West Baltimore. Joe Smallwood was the lead singer who put the group together. How do I know? I was married to Joe Smallwood! An outstanding vocalist, leader, and visionary. Wow! Had not heard this song in years. Our home was the "rehearsal" hall, and it was fabulous to hear the vocals coming from our basement as I would be upstairs in the kitchen preparing meals, etc., with our son. Beautiful memories. Joe is the last brother living and doing very well.

Were they the same Smallwood Brothers that released two records on Atco: "No One (Can Ever Take Your Place" / "How Many Roads" and "You Can't Reason With A Broken Heart" / "Day Before Tomorrow"? Both were released in 1977, two years after the second record on Wand, "I Don't Want To Go Back" / (instrumental).
