What gets my back up with Caravan and Motorhome club is the site fees. More the electricity. Why should someone in a 2 birth caravan pay the same as a 5/6 birth or a large motorhome all with A/C, etc, and all the toys. Why don't they do as nearly all the independent sites do and pay for what you use! I will not be renewing our membership for next year. We always went to Bunree, not no more after the cost of fuel and the site fees up there. It's cheaper to have a break abroad with the hassle. Don't get me wrong, We always enjoyed it there . But there comes a time to say enough is enough. I think i speak for many other like wise people

A good diatribe on caravanning... May I add a twist to this. As a storage site owner, (and I guess pitch site owners too), we have found that annually business rates are sucking the lifeblood out of our business.....if we were to fully cover this rediculous cost our storage fees would need to rise by 50%. Soo...higher costs = fewer storers. Its a balance between having a viable business or no business!!

Yep, its getting to be where only the privileged few can pay. Thus dies another popular British pastime on the road to perdition.

Not the sites, it's those willing to pay the extortionate fees that ultimately ruin it for everyone.

I caravanned with my parents then my husband (he was my boyfriend at the time) then camped. When we were married and about 30 we bought our first caravan 1999) for £2000 and caravanned right up until 2022 when we sold up. We both worked shifts and every weekend we were able we went away, had a week in spring, two weeks in summer, and a week in autumn. It got to the stage it cost us nearly £1000 a year between storage (£200 silver secure), insurance and servicing to keep warranty up. On top of that, we used more fuel when towing and site fees and started using CL sites where possible. It got to the stage we couldn’t justify the prices of sites/CL/ fuel and could go for a week to a Premier Inn for much less. My husband and I for the first time are now going abroad on holiday instead. We were considering a campervan/motorhome but then we will be in the same position cost wise and the money we would spend on outlay and running costs would buy us three holidays abroad for ever!

We work on a site. We asked about the necessity to charge 35 a night for a pitch. So heres the answer. The cost of running the site has doubled. They have to pay business rates, increased water and electric fees. Even if you don't use the hook up you will likely use on site facilities. Because all of our cost of living has gone up wages have had to increase. Refuse removal has increased. They are forced by local councils to have everyday refuse, recycling and dog pooh all collected and paid for seperately. They have to have the cess pit where you empty your loos emptied regularly. This also costs and those costs have gone up. More and more people demand a nice big flat pitch and modern shower blocks. This all costs money and it costs to maintain it. We are on a stunning site part of tranquil parks and its truly worth every penny... and we are fans of wild camping. We have 70 odd pitches and we don't have a spare one for August. So they must have something right. Once a month we get some tight arse who says 'i am not paying that' and off he trots. Campsites are businesses and they are affected by the cost of living too. And don't forget what the owners need to live their own lives have increased costs. Uf people don't want to pay find alternative ways of holidaying or ask the government to bring the cost of living back to pre pandemic levels.

The really interesting comparison, for me, is with sites in France (cost of living similar to UK). Many sites in Europe are part of the ACSI camping scheme and give big discounts away from the peak season. We've stayed at many excellent campsites in France which have swimming pools, restaurant, take-away snacks, play area, table tennis, bar, gym and are in lovely locations for less than 25 euros per night (including elect.). In contrast we're booked into Brighton CMC site in early September on a grass pitch for one night - £45!

It's at the point by the time you've paid for all the kit / van / car / servicing / insurance / fuel / pitch fees/pitch electric bill .... It's cheaper to get on a plane and do a all inclusive holiday a couple of times a year...... Last site I was on a 907 camping Gaz canister £45!

Pitch costs over priced putting people off camping , Monitoring electric usasge on individual pitches would make more sense, as people abuse what they use ie. ( keeping the awning warm ).

We sold our caravan and bought a campervan, we find cheap places to stop like car parks, little farm sites, truck stops, even laybys sometimes, we only sleep there the night then move on into a town, we toured the whole of the west and south coast of Wales last year over two weeks and maybe cost us fifty quid to stop overnight for the whole trip, never been happier, we actually found we prefer this way to campsites even if they were cheaper, the rules, regulations, drunk people, loud music etc etc is awful on most sites.

Just sold our van due to ages. Need to think overall costs, annual warranty service costs, insurances, replacing tyres/parts, storage, towing fuel mpg, on site fully serviced pitch, extra cost to erect awning etc, hard work cleaning, polishing, loading clothes, foods, accesories etc. Also £30K capital purchasing cost, annual depreciation, loss of interest on capital cost. It ain't cheap!

Caravan storage Berkshire is about £125 a month some around that for every 4 weeks , there are some cheaper . The better ones have good cctv and controlled access level Storage and reasonable space between bays some have wash bay with mobile ladder for roof cleaning access. Seems quite expensive but most are full . Doubles the cost if you want a seasonal Pitch for more exploring and less towing . The way we look at it is quite a lot of hotels it’s now £150/200 per person per night with breakfast and perhaps a £25/30 contribution to dinner so a pitch fee of prob £25/30 a night with good CC facilities on a neat easy access site is a very good alternative in our own space with our dogs which hotels charge more for like £25 each a night. We gave up hotels with dog friendly rooms as they were often not that friendly/ clean …one hotel tried to charge us £100 a few years back for a special clean of a paid for dog friendly room and our dogs has made no mess …..many caravaners have dogs with them and I guess find CC sites still good value as there are often seniors or late booking discounts or deals to be had less than standard tarrif , a bit of shopping around still find good deals . The CL you mention we also use and cheaper with some more basic more “rustic” feel which is fine if you don’t like the manicured CC type or private commercial sites … It’s all relative I guess , a bit more expensive than it used to be but what isn’t ?

Camped this year in Cornwall and Devon. Tent, 2 adults £20pn, £280 the fortnight. No depreciation, no storage, no insurance and no unit to maintain. The savings then pay for weekends away in B&B or Premierr Inn. Oh, and you can do 70 on the motorway. Fancied an Eriba for a long time, but the fees and being in a field with gin palace leisure vehicles/mobile hotels? Nah. Hard to get snobbish about ya tent and that suits me just fine! 😂😂

But now its becoming cheaper to book a cheap vacation in say Spain The initial cost of the caravan . the tug car . the camp site fees . ? All adds up and makes it non cost effective

A good summary, you seem to know the caravan sector quite well. However, there is one elephant in the room which can turn everything on its head. Currently every 5 years a Zoonotic Virus is jumping from the animals to humans. Another respiratory virus is currently overdue. Another SARS epidemic will be with us shortly. We were very very lucky that COVID 19 did not follow the usual pathogen route and only really attacked the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. Usually these pathogens are most deadly on the youngest in populations. The next pathogen would in all likely follow this route. But people only remember COVID 19 and how they beat the virus and did not follow Govt advice. If they try that with a youngest first mortality rate, it will take out the most stupid elements in the population. Another pathogen will see caravan and campervan prices explode. As caravan prices plummet, buying a cheap one in the next year or so, will pay dividends . It is NOT if, but WHEN another deadly virus crosses over the the human population, and a mobile home will become a much sought after item again. I still cannot understand these maroons that sold an appreciating asset like a house to go and spend their cash on a depreciating asset like a motorhome and constantly live in a mobile box van. A fixed site caravan is perhaps the best option.

I like a camping trip or two in the summer with my kids and we're exclusively doing UK holidays until all our kids can swim. However, once the kids can swim all bets are off and we'll be spending half as much money to go on twice as many foreign holidays! The price of UK breaks, even caravans and tents, is astonishing. I can't wait to get cheaper, longer, better holidays abroad in a couple of years. Until then, its shabby rip-off holiday parks sadly😂 The camping can stay though.

Would love to know where you invest your cash !0% .....4.85 is about best I can get. Anyway We do two weeks to the alpes from Newcastle in our motorhome every year. Abot £550 fuel £250 Ferry . Less than £80 normally on sites as mainlly aires ( once did 3 weeks to spain and 3 euro was my camping fee Toilet empying ) Plus you can just move around seeing and doing what you want therefore staying near where you want to be . No backwards and forwards. Dont tell everybody all they will all want one and prices will stay high. Cost is the only downside .in my opinion but well worth it. I could go on how it is cheaper for us to own a motorhome than not own a motorhome but that is a whole vlog in itself.

I was in the process of booking the C&CC site at Dunstan Hill in Northumberland for a week in August, when they quoted me £485 for two of us and our two berth tourer (both of us members). Needless to say, I went elsewhere and booked an independent with better access to local amenities and a 10 min walk from a top beach for the same week for £35 a night! I wrote and complained to the C&CC about the cost and they replied telling me how their prices were as cheap as possible 😲 Seriously thinking about not renewing my membership next season.

And yet the first thing they do when they buy a new basic site is close it for months while they install hard standings, EHU and fancy toilet blocks at a cost of millions over and above the purchase price so they can charge high fees.

We sold our caravan a few months ago because the cost of everything was/is becoming outrageous. It was already a second hand caravan but it caused unwanted interest sitting on our drive, so we moved it to a secure site at £750. A requirement of secure storage was insurance at £220. Obviously this excludes a yearly service; any repairs; site fees etc. I tried to find a replacement bathroom window and it went into the hundreds. It’s become a rich man’s game. Nonetheless, we’ve just come back from a holiday cabin in the south west for a fraction of the cost and without the hassle.

We've been caravaning for almost 40 years so have seen the rise in in pitch prices and caravan prices which rose rapidly with the onset of covid. Many people took to caravaning at thus time as they couldn't go abroad and saw it as a cheaper option. Well in my opinion to many felt it neccersary to buy a brand new all singing all dancing van that needed mains hook up to sustain them over the weekend) holiday use. Enter GREED as caravan dealers and and site owners eyes lit up with delight. Now Covid is not as evident as it was, many oeople are going abroad again so there vans are left unused on drives and in storage across the country. New van sales are greatly diminished, even Broadlane Caravans in the Midllands have called in administrators. There will now be a huge amount of barely used second hand vans on the markek at knockdown prices partly also due to people not wanting to pay inflated site fees (who could blame them), this was always going to happen) we had a couple of new vans (not top of the range) in 2000, had one stolen and wouldn't bother again, our current van is 20 years old and does everything we need and hardly ever bother with hook up. Don't pay those inflated pitch fees, they'll have to bring them down or shut up shop, there are loads of sites to choose from, happy caravanning😢
