I have used a large lock washer and the screw holding the shelplate never comes lose - I recommend spending a few cents on a lock washer and save time on checking and tightening it every once in a while

Thanks for the Great video, I do have a question, I'm having a hard time setting up my powder measure for 9mm, I find I have to adjust it too maybe 3 threads down from the top and then I can't install the PTX bracket. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks

Nice video, thanks! 🙂 Even 8 years later there are those of us buying this unit - as of right now this cost (hold on to your hats gentlemen) $1500 here in Norway! BTW: I think the reason your case didn't shrink in length as expected, was that you forgot to loosen the set screw in the back when you turned the adjustment wheel to lower the case - it looks like it was just tightened more and more, never loosened ;-)

Why not just spend the money and buy more expensive cases if you are attempting to get better results ? Ps: Hornady should NOT be grouped with Lepua & Norma at best it's a bit better than PMC, Winchester or Rem. but when they are all shot about 5 times each those later 3 are all the same. The biggest variance is the neck wall thickness which is accurately the same with Lepua & Norma but varies some 2k + - with Hornady, Winchester , Rem. & PMC. I just finished reloading PMC 223 case 40 times and by the 20th reload half of the cases had to be thrown out and by 30 half of what was left because of a ring forming around the bottom of the case. Interesting enough from 30 to 35 reloads 5 more were thrown out but because the necks split. I just reloaded 40 Lepua cases and at the end of 40 reloads all 40 cases are still good to reload. With all this work you're attempting to change a Volkswagen into a Porche.

I wonder, Would it be better to have a case that is a once fired in the gun we are loading for ? i.e use a once fired case that has been drilled and tapped for the wonderful Hornady gauge. I am loading for a 7.62x51 but using .308 fired brass...the cases are a bit diff.

A little missing info. Max head space is determined by How much the die is adjusted to the maximum cam over. It’s best to only cam over the die on the .010 shell holder, the step up the smaller ones as needed. You can’t just pick one to adjust the die to without knowing where you need to headspace to. If you can over on the .010 shell holder there’s no need to use a standard Redding shell holder. Besides, they are standard to other cartridges.

You cannot effectively measure OAL with this tool. Fireform a case and bump shoulder where needed. Use after firing reamer by Forster and ream the neck after sizing the neck, then Lee collet neck size, bullet will have a snugger fir and be straight. Use Red lock tite in neck, place bullet in neck, chamber for about 5 minutes. Be careful not use too much lock tite.

TIP: for the Hornady bullet comparator; I just measured 3 different 223 bullets of different weights and manufacturers and found a total of CBTO variance of some .030. All bullets must have identical O'Gives. Then I removed the plastic plunger and filed down the rounded end into a more pointed end and remeasured a 3 bullets again @ 8 each and found the new total variance of the same bullets to be .010. In two of the bullets the CBTO variance was less than 5%. Very accurate now. My conclusion is the bullet bases are not 100% perpendicular to the concentricity of the bullet and the plastic plunger end is too large to get an accurate reading on a small point from the base of the bullets. This was all done in a brand-new JC Custom barrel just purchased and not installed. I wish Hornady would install a smaller metal pointed end on their plunger for a little extra money.

I’ve heard that these have lots of problems and that they’re very finicky. That you have to be comfortable with doing a lot of tinkering. Is that what you have experience?

You made the first mistake you must separate the large from the small or they will become locked together by the media pins or rifle and pistol also problems, I use their cleaner and lemon shine and I use a nylon sock to put over the end and catch the pins as I rinse also I use hot water and it works great with less time. When all media pin are collected in the nylon sock I use the dryer to dry the pin as well as your brass once you do it a few times you'll get the hang of it, I recommend the dryer and then run it through the tumbler separator and I find no problems with preparing the cases and then tumbling, nasty ugly brass will come out like new use your best judgment I hope my two cents worth helps good luck. Oh, I use an old coffee can plastic to store my pins once their dry. Once you get a routine, it's just fine. Good luck.

With .300 Savage ammo now so expensive 😫 OR impossible to find, and nearly 2 million such rifles still out there in the hands of Hunters, I ordered a set of the Hornady rifle dies for this cartridge. Seems it's very easy to re-form the .308 Winchester brass into .300 Savage brass. So, I intend to keep my families old classic rifles bringing home deer meat for years to come.

Wow!! with all that preparation especially measuing the primer pocket depth and reaming it, bumping the shoulder etc. I expect you to put 5 bullets into the same hole at a 100 yards. Seems like a lot of work for very little gain. I case trim my cases, individually weigh the powder charge and the bullet, use the concentricity tool and end end up with .375 groups at a 100 yards. Good enough for me !!! Otherwise I like all your videos. You have taught me a lot over the years. Keep up the excellent camera work and the videos. Thank you

A feeler guage set accomplishes the same thing as the Competition shellholders and doesn't cost nearly as much while giving you even finer size increment and eliminating a source of variation by always using the same standard shellholder.
